Seeking: Farm Operations Manager / Groundskeeper

The Job: Family owned/operated producer and seller of 100% grass fed beef, seeks a farm operations manager for the coordination and execution of its new grass-fed beef operation, based in Mechanicsburg, PA.

This position is an opportunity to manage and build our grass-fed beef production company. We’re looking for someone with foundational expertise in grass-fed cattle farming and a desire to be accountable for the growth of a business.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ration preparation and cattle feeding on pasture
  • Cattle moving, sorting and routine handling
  • Rotational grazing system management
  • Permanent and temporary fencing
  • Daily record-keeping and data management
  • Maintaining the 500 acres (mowing, snow plow, etc.)

Qualifications: Must have proven skill in all forms of communication, large animal husbandry, machinery operation, fencing, data management, and general farm maintenance.

Ability to work independently, ask questions, handle challenging situations, and solve practical problems required. 5+ years experience in the grass-fed cattle industry, animal nutrition, and/or business management is required.

Specific Skills Required:

  • Cattle handling and care experience
  • Proficiency in digital communications, including e-mail, mobile phone and text communication
  • Record-keeping and digital data managment
  • Farm tool and machinery operation, welding, mowing, etc.

Start Date: Interviewing will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Compensation: Housing provided, health insurance, company truck, and possible sales comission, dependent on experience.

The Quivira Coalition New Agrarian Program seeks applicants for its 8-month (March to Nov 2016) on-site apprenticeships at:

San Juan Ranch in Alamosa, CO
San Juan Ranch is a certified organic, grass-fed beef ranch located in the San Luis Valley near Saguache, Colorado operated by George Whitten and Julie Sullivan. The apprenticeship curriculum includes Holistic Management, animal husbandry, range health monitoring, planned grazing, herding, ranch infrastructure maintenance, improving soil by grazing cover crops on irrigated cropland, finishing process for grass-fed cattle, low-stress livestock handling, and organic certification. In addition, the curriculum may include a series of professional development opportunities. Apprentices emerge from the program with tangible skills, both technical and interpersonal, that are essential for successful employment in sustainable agriculture, and for eventual ownership and management of their own operation.

You are an individual who wants to work in an agricultural business environment. The position will require you to set goals, then set priorities, and respond quickly to changing conditions to achieve those goals. Grass-Based Dairy and Creamery seeks Interns

Williamstown, Massachusetts

Cricket Creek Farm is a small grass-based dairy in Williamstown, Massachusetts.  We make several award-winning cheeses from the milk of our herd of Brown Swiss and Jersey cows (currently milking 25 cows).  In addition to the cheese, we sell raw milk from our farm store.  We also raise beef cows and whey-fed pigs, as well as layer hens.  We make all our own hay for our cows (3 cuts on 150 acres).  We have a bakery located on the farm that supplies the store with fresh bread, cookies, granola, and other baked goods.  We are a member of Berkshire Grown and sell cheese to many shops & restaurants in the Berkshires.  We attend several local farmers markets and have a CSA offering milk, cheese, eggs, beef, pork & bread.  We also have a cheese CSA in Brooklyn, NY.

We are looking for 5 interns to join us for 2012.  Interns would help in cheese making, general farm work, or both – depending on experience and interest.
