Brookwood Community Farm is hiring an Assistant Grower for the 2013 growing season!
About the Farm
Brookwood Community Farm is a 5-acre farm that grows diversified vegetables and flowers in Milton, MA. Using organic methods (not certified) we provide produce for a 200-member CSA, a weekly farmer’s market, subsidized low-income markets, and donations to local food pantries. As a non-profit community farm we also offer educational and volunteer opportunities for our CSA members, youth and corporate groups, as well as members of the public. For more information about the farm and our mission, please visit: http://www.brookwoodcommunityfarm.org
We are looking for someone who has one year of farming experience, preferably as an apprentice, and is interested in potentially pursuing a career in farming. Tractor experience is a plus, but not required. We seek individuals with a good sense of humor who enjoy working hard, are excited to learn, responsible and flexible. You must be able to clearly follow and give directions, not be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes, be able to work independently, and communicate well with others. You must be able to perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks, work in all kinds of weather, and be able to safely lift 50 lbs. You must have a valid driver’s license.
About the Position
As an assistant grower, you will participate in every aspect of the growing process including greenhouse seeding, tractor work, planting, weeding, harvesting, distributing and marketing produce and field crew supervision. In addition you will be asked to take on some management responsibilities based
on your interests.
Because Brookwood is a community farm that encourages participation from our members you may occasionally be required to work with individual volunteers or visiting groups of all ages. A strong candidate will be comfortable interacting with the public and able to present a friendly and professional face for our organization.
Learning is important to us at Brookwood and as an assistant grower you will be expected to participate in group and individual goal setting and check-ins with the Farm Manager. You will participate in weekly field walks as well as many in the field training opportunities. In addition to learning, you will
have ample opportunity for sharing your own knowledge and insights. Brookwood is a relatively young farm that is constantly changing and improving, so innovation and new ideas are encouraged.
As an assistant grower, you will be encouraged to learn from other farmers in the area through CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training) gatherings. In additional you will be encouraged to attend workshops or a conference of your choosing, as well as work visits at area farms.
The assistant grower position offers a longer season than our apprenticeships. You will work full time mid March through mid November with part-time work available for a month on each end. The full-time schedule begins Mon-Fri and switches to Tues-Sat in the beginning of May. The hours also vary by the time of year but are 7am-5pm for the majority of the season.
The assistant grower is paid $520/week full-time. You will also get produce from the farm and discounts on off-farm products such as eggs and fruit. You will have 5 paid vacation days and three paid personal/sick days throughout the season.
You will also have access to a $250 educational benefit for conference/ workshops of your choice and a $100 equipment stipend.
There is no housing available on the farm.
Please send in a resume, cover letter, and two references to firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until filled so please send in your application ASAP. Please contact us if you have any questions.
