Appleton Farm hiring Assistant CSA Manager

Farm Description:

Appleton Farms is located in Ipswich, MA and is one of the oldest continually operating farms in the country. The property is now managed by the Trustees of Reservations, a Massachusetts nonprofit land conservation organization. The CSA grows vegetables on 24 acres for nearly 550 shareholders, as well as for donation to local food pantries. CSA distribution occurs on-site, and it is a mix-and-match, volume-based share.\

In addition to the vegetable CSA, the farm includes a separately managed dairy and livestock operation producing milk, cheese, eggs and beef for sale at the farm’s Dairy Store. Other activities on the 1,000 acre property include adult and child educational programs, community events and walking/horse-riding trails.

Position Description:

The Assistant CSA Manager works with the CSA Manager to grow vegetables for shareholders, donations to hunger relief agencies and wholesale accounts. The Assistant reports to the CSA Manager and also works with farm staff from educational, maintenance and livestock programs as needed.  The position is salaried and year round with a seasonally variable work schedule.

Responsibilities:

Participate in the day-to-day operations, including planting, weeding, irrigation and harvesting.

Assist the CSA manager in supervising apprentices, part-time workers and volunteers in planting, weeding, and harvesting, and in demonstrating appropriate pace in carrying out these tasks.

Help to create a positive and friendly work atmosphere.

Work with the CSA Manager to monitor, evaluate and improve soil fertility, manage pest and weed control, and develop annual crop plans.

Help manage and maintain CSA equipment, infrastructure and facilities including tractors and tractor implements, trucks, greenhouse and hoophouse, barn, cooler, fencing and irrigation systems.

In conjunction with the CSA Manager, manage tractor tillage, fertilizer application, cultivation, organic pesticide application as needed, and cover crop seeding.

With the CSA Manager, help train seasonal CSA staff in safe tractor operation and use of equipment and facilities

Help recruit and hire seasonal staff.

Help manage and encourage public involvement in the CSA operation where appropriate.

In conjunction with the CSA Manager assess and plan ongoing improvements to make the CSA more ‘green’

Qualifications:

At least 2 years of direct, hands-on experience on a production–oriented organic vegetable farm.

Experience operating and maintaining tractors and other farm equipment.

Ability to work independently with little supervision or as a member of a team.

Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service skills

Some experience supervising other staff and volunteers.

Ability to work long hours and perform physically strenuous farm tasks including repeatedly lifting up to 50lbs.

Strong work ethic, willingness to be flexible and a positive attitude.

Drivers license and clean driving record

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position provides an excellent fringe benefits package which includes group health insurance, vacation and sick pay and after one year, a defined contribution pension plan. A private house is available on the property.
