Field & Equipment Technician at Picadilly Farm

Picadilly Farm is a family farm, owned and operated by Jenny and Bruce Wooster since 2006. We grow certified organic produce on 35 acres, for 800 Community Supported Agriculture shareholders. The farm is located on 71 acres of rural farmland in southwest New Hampshire, in the Connecticut River valley, just over the state line from Northfield, MA, 20 minutes from Brattleboro VT, and half an hour from both Greenfield MA and Keene NH. Employees at Picadilly Farm include an Assistant Manager, a Field & Equipment Technician, a Delivery Driver, 7-8 Full Season Field Crew (8-9 months), and a dozen summer weeders.

Job Details and Responsibilities: The Field & Equipment Technician (FT) works in many aspects of farm field work, including: tractor operation for tillage, seeding, mowing, fertilizing, harvesting, and cultivation; maintenance/repair of six tractors, six vehicles, and more equipment; and irrigation via drip tape and overhead nozzles. The FT is also available for farm deliveries and errands. Tasks vary throughout the season and to a certain degree are shaped by the personal interests/inclinations of the FT. The FT will often work independently, but will sometimes join the field crew in planting, weeding or harvesting tasks if needed.

Job Schedule: The position runs from late February through late December each year, with an annual winter break. The work schedule includes some weekend work from May through December, with one weekend off per month. Weekly hours vary from 40-58 hours, according to seasonal demands. Two season commitment minimum, with long-term potential.

Skills and qualifications: A successful Field & Equipment Technician will show good attention to detail, have a flexible disposition, and an ability to work through daily complications as they arise. Applicants must have 2+ years working on a commercial scale farm, proficiency with hand and power tools, a valid driver’s license, and be comfortable with physical work in all weather conditions. A working knowledge of plant biology is preferred, but not required.

Wages & compensation: Competitive 10-month salary, one weekend off/month, produce from the farm for personal consumption, one week’s paid vacation, and sick pay. On-farm housing (possibly shared and excluding utilities) is offered with the position.
