Gibbet Hill Farm (http://www.gibbethillfarm.com/) is a sustainably-grown vegetable and berry farm located in Groton, MA. There are 2 acres in annual vegetable production, 1/4 acre in berries and 1/4 acre in hoop houses for season extension. Grass-fed lamb and beef are also raised on the farm. The farm is part of the Webber Restaurant Group (4 restaurants and a catering business) and is dedicated solely to supplying the chefs within the restaurant group with locally-sourced, sustainably-raised produce and meat. Two of the venues (Gibbet Hill Grill and The Barn at Gibbet Hill) are located on the farm and customers are highly encouraged to hike the walking trails and visit with the farmers. This is a very exciting time for the farm as we are planning to increase acreage and extend the growing season to year round.
We are now taking applications for one apprentice to work side-by-side with the farm manager at the forefront of the farm-to-restaurant movement in New England. The apprentice will learn all aspects of greenhouse seeding, field planting, soil health, weed and pest management, harvesting, and the necessary quality-controls required for growing for restaurants. Some experience with livestock may also be a possibility.
Qualifications: We are looking for individuals who are energetic, friendly, and passionate about sustainable agriculture and the local food movement. Ideally, you are someone who loves working hard towards a great goal, has an awesome positive attitude (no matter what the weather is doing!) and has 1 year of experience working on a production farm. Individuals must be excited for the physically demanding schedule, tasks, and pace of the farm season. You must be able to lift 50 lbs and have a valid driver’s license.
Hours: The apprenticeship will run from mid-April until the end of October. The hours worked/week will fluctuate with the growing season, ranging from 40-50 hours/week.
Compensation: The position pays $10/hr plus overtime (for work weeks over 40 hours) and produce from the farm. The apprentice will have the chance to attend Gibbet Hill Grill’s Family Meal (for all restaurant and farm staff) once a week. You will be highly encouraged to attend emass CRAFT meetings to further your learning experience.
