INTERN POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Horticulture Intern

The Massachusetts Horticultural Society was founded in 1829 and is a member-supported organization. It is dedicated to encouraging and improving the science and practice of horticulture and developing the public’s enjoyment, appreciation and understanding of plants and the environment. Our headquarters are located on the 36-acre Cheney Estate in Dover listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gardens at Elm Bank include eight Mass Hort Gardens and four plant society gardens. We have one restored historic garden, the Italianate Garden, and several greenhouses.

2014 Internship Positions:

  1. Weezie’s Children’s Garden: 40 hours per week, hourly rate tba

Weezie’s Children’s Garden: This whimsical children’s garden was designed by Julie Moir Messervy. The garden is designed as a series of small spiraling gardens, each with its own theme and unique way of engaging the senses. Weezie’s intern: in addition to Intern job description below, helps with children’s programming.

  1. Garden to Table Vegetable Garden: 40 hours per week, hourly rate tba

Chef’s Garden and Food Pantry Garden: Start with a seed, end with a meal! The Chef’s Garden is a unique design of vegetable beds that display and edible landscape featuring a variety of international cuisines. Organic best practices are utilized. In 2012 the gardens provided over 3,500 pounds of food to local food pantries. Chef and Pantry Garden intern helps harvest vegetables for the food pantry and for cooking programs, in addition to intern description below.

  1. Generalist Intern: 20 hours per week, hourly rate tba

Supervisor: Garden Curator

INTERN JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Horticulture Intern will play an important role in maintaining the Gardens at Elm Bank and its diverse plantings during the spring and summer seasons.

Working interactively with a team of staff, garden keepers, master gardeners, and volunteers, the intern’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Primary Tasks

  • Care for diverse plantings of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and blubs
  • Perform seasonal landscape work including weeding, pruning, clean-up, bulb planting, dividing and transplanting, and leaf removal
  • Scout for pests and disease
  • Participate in trash removal procedures, as needed
  • Maintain highest standards for park cleanliness and order throughout the Gardens at Elm Bank, including sweeping and maintenance around special features, benches, and entry ways
  • Maintain equipment and tools needed to perform daily tasks
  • Hand water and monitor irrigation of plantings, especially during time of establishment and drought
  • Maintenance of walkways and water features
  • Help with garden tours and educating the public as an ambassador for Mass Hort

Qualifications

  • Detail oriented, with considerable attention to order and cleanliness throughout the gardens
  • Willingness to work as part of a team or alone, in all weather conditions
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor on a daily bases; life 30-50 pounds
  • Ability to use outdoor maintenance and power equipment; operate electric vehicles
  • Experience in landscape maintenance and horticulture
