Deep Springs College is located in an isolated desert valley in the Eastern Sierra. We strive for a ‘field-to-table’ food system, balancing economic use of commercial food supplies as needed with sustainable use of our own food resources wherever possible. We raise all of our own natural range fed beef, and pork, as well as the majority of own eggs. Our organic garden supplies the kitchen with the majority of its produce for 6 months of the year. Students milk our own cows, and make fresh cream, yogurt and buttermilk under the direction of the Cook. The Cook works with the garden, farm & ranch staff to feed the community as self-sufficiently as possible. Resource management, food processing, long term storage, and sustainability practices are all desired skills.
Deep Springs College seeks an experienced and creative cook with management experience and a strong interest in teaching students. The job involves managing the kitchen operation, teaching and mentoring student cooks, and preparing meals for an isolated community of 50 using the produce of Deep Springs’ ranch & farm. The job requires long periods of time standing and the ability to lift 50lbs. The position start date is June 15th. Application deadline May 12th.
