Nutrition Program Specialist with The Green Thumb Project (GTP)

We are seeking applicants for our newest AmeriCorps position. Our project’s mission is to empower our community with the confidence and creativity needed to raise or buy, cook, and eat good food every day. The successful candidate for this position will also have the opportunity to participate in cultivating our garden sites, attend special events, and be an active member of our leadership team. The ideal candidate should be equally comfortable taking initiative and working collaboratively in a close-knit team environment.

Roles and responsibilities include

  •       Activities providing participating community school districts with evidence-based nutrition education to expand their students’ access to healthy food
  •        Developing student access to on-site garden outdoor classrooms
  •       Helping teachers develop lesson plans for nutrition education in the garden
  •       Training teachers to present these lesson plans
  •       Assisting in outdoor classroom presentations
  •       Introducing students and the broader community to fresh, local, tasty fruits and vegetables and expanding the connection between local food producers and the food being served in school nutrition program
  •      Teaching youth cooking skills; use of diverse/local/healthy ingredients in cooking; and recipe reading and creation
  •       Creating a nutrition curriculum that emphasizes the children’s backgrounds and cultures, and relates to their lives and eating with their families
  •       Facilitate nutrition workshops at GTP garden sites that are engaging, fun, and informative
  •       Plan and implement community meals using fresh, local foods that include cooking demonstrations
  •       Document all lessons, plans, evaluations and games

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in nutrition, cooking and/or nutrition education
  • Teaching or other educational experience
  • Some farm/garden experience
  • Outgoing and engaging personality
  • Experience with non-profits, social media, and community outreach is a plus
