Ethos Farm hiring Two Interns

Long Valley, New Jersey

About the farm:  Ethos Farm in Long Valley, New Jersey is a National Historic Landmark and has been a working farm for more than 275 years.

As of 2014, the 342 acre farm is home to a primary care practice and diversified vegetable and fruit farm that combined forces to change the health of the community by promoting a plant-based whole foods lifestyle. This is certainly not your traditional farm! Our unique concept and partnership is on the cutting edge of agricultural and health movements. Within the framework of farm stewardship lives our desire to coax forth from the soil the most delicious and nutritious foods, called “living medicines.” We feel our objectives of preserving the environment and providing food dovetail perfectly together and connect the health of everything– food, flora, fauna, people and the earth.

We practice sustainable and organic farming methods with a focus on building soil health and promoting native species. We are currently applying for organic certification. We use a CSA model to build partnership with our community members and to support our farm. Our farm offers wellness programming and events to community members that include food preservation and cooking classes, yoga, harvest fests, and volunteer days.

About the job: Ethos Farm is moving into its second season with plans to expand our growing fields to 4-6 acres and our market outreach. The developmental stages of a new farm start-up offer invaluable opportunity and insight on how to plan and manage a farm. We are committed to instructing and helping interns develop as farmers, sharing our knowledge of sustainable agriculture and land management, and working together to create a community of health and wellness.

This season we are hiring two interns from April to October. Interns will be involved in all aspects of farm work including seeding, planting, mulching, harvesting and processing vegetables, CSA set up, and produce deliveries. Interns should be prepared to work within an integral team (including our primary care staff!) and individually. Interns will work 5 ½ -6 days/week and approximately 45-60 hours/week depending on the time of season. Hours will be scheduled, but we will make every effort to be flexible based on the needs of the farm. Applicants must be in excellent physical health and be able to lift 50 pounds. We expect hard work and dedication, desire to learn, openness to new ideas, and willingness to have fun! Ideally, we are seeking people who are interested in pursuing a career in agriculture. Experience is preferred, but not required.

A shared room will be provided in a beautifully-preserved 1830 farmhouse. Interns will receive a stipend of $1000/month, produce from the farm, and access to Dr. Ron Weiss, a board certified physician (and botanist!).

About the area: Long Valley is a small farming community with acres of open and preserved land, nearby hiking trails, state parks, and waterways known for great trout fly fishing. The farm sits adjacent to the Columbia Trail, a ten mile walk/bike/horse path, that extends from Long Valley to High Bridge and passes through the Ken Lockwood Gorge. Long Valley is home to the Long Valley Brew Pub, a magnificent stone mason barn restored as a restaurant and microbrewery with homemade food, drink, and live music. Also in town is a bike shop, bagel shop, and antique shops, a beautiful and welcoming peony farm, and humbling views of aesthetic sunsets. Neighboring towns offer small shopping centers and eateries, including a yoga studio, bookshop, natural foods store, and delicious ethnic cuisine. For cultural life, theatre, and good restaurants, Morristown is only a twenty-five minute drive. Long Valley is approximately one hour from New York City and is accessible via nearby train.
