POSITION: Learning Garden Educator (2 positions)

LOCATION: 17705 NW Springville Road, Portland, OR  97229


The Learning Garden Educators will support the campus Sustainability Office by leading educational activities for the Learning Garden, solid waste, recycling and composting efforts, and other related sustainability projects.  The 3.6 acre on campus Learning Garden includes 51 raised beds (for food service and community members), approximately ½ acre of row crops, a cob tool shed with solar powered irrigation, earthen oven with a green roof, rainwater catchment, 65-tree orchard, berries, grapes, kiwis, bee hives, plus public art pieces throughout. Recruiting, training and supervising service learning students, PCC club members, community and PCC volunteers in support of the garden, will be a key component of the job. Additionally, the Learning Garden Educator will lead efforts to develop new hunger relief efforts and expand the Learning Garden’s impact.


1. Provide daily Learning Garden activities such as propagation, planting, weeding, and harvesting food.

2. Manage, coordinate, and track student community-based learning activities in the Learning Garden.

3. Lead educational activities such as tours and garden workshops for raised bed users, students, and the broader community on the topics of growing food, healthy eating, and personal health.

4. Support hydroponic and passive solar hoop house season extension plantings.

5. Design and create electronic and print outreach materials to market and publicize Learning Garden events and initiatives.

6. Recruit and supervise community volunteers to participate in Learning Garden work parties, events, and other activities.

7. Facilitate compost education and outreach among faculty, staff and students to support the Rock Creek Loop. (vermicompost, electric Rocket Composter).

8. Work with Associated Students of PCC (ASPCC) to engage and serve non-traditional and underserved student populations on campus and in the Learning Garden.

9. Collect ongoing data related to food production, food waste, compost, volunteer hours and other projects.

10. Complete and submit in a timely manner all OSSC/AmeriCorps required reports and time sheets.

11. Participate in OSSC/AmeriCorps sponsored orientation, trainings, meetings and disaster-related activities.


1. Support the Learning Garden’s social media presence, e.g., website and Facebook.

2. Conduct online research for sustainability efforts as needed.


1. An independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful individual who enjoys working with diverse groups of people, both in the office and outside (rain or shine).

2. Ability to manage multiple projects and events and complete assigned tasks in a professional, organized and timely manner.

3. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred along with hands on garden and/or farming experience.

4. Ability to dig, kneel, and lift 50 pounds.

Dates of Service: 

September 1-2, 2015: Two-day, one night OSSC member orientation (Aldersgate Retreat Center).

~September 8, 2015 – July 31, 2016 — 1700 hours over 11 months
