Littleton Community Farm hiring Farm Manager

Littleton, Massachusetts

Littleton Community Farm seeks an, entrepreneurial, community-oriented, adaptive Farm Manager.  The salaried seasonal position will run from March 1, 2016 to November, 30, 2016.

About Us:  Littleton Community Farm (LCF) is an emerging non-profit organization using non-certified organic methods.  We are a 2.8 acre community farm located in Prouty Woods, a beautiful setting in Littleton, MA that is a favorite spot for locals due to the hiking trails that run throughout the forest. The farm is an excellent site for educational programming and for community volunteer opportunities.

This is a great opportunity for someone with solid apprenticeship experience, strong interpersonal, and leadership skills to take on farm management responsibilities on a small-scale operation, and to gain first-hand experience in starting a farm in Eastern Massachusetts.

Position Description:   The Farm Manager will manage and oversee all farm operations, and will be responsible for fulfilling the CSAs. The Farm Manager will work to fine tune the farm plan, offering ideas and revisions, and will be responsible for its execution, producing a variety of vegetables, flowers and herbs for distribution.  Farming responsibilities include standard operations: ordering seeds, overseeing seedling production at an outside facility as well as seed propagation on site during mid-season, weed, pest, and disease control, soil enhancement, cover cropping, planting and cultivation, irrigation management, harvesting, washing and packing food for the shares.  The Farmer will interact with community members when they visit the farm, at CSA pick up, and at a small number of organized outreach events.  The Farm Manager will plan and lead a limited number of farm based education opportunities through the season.

The Farm Manager is the face of Littleton Community Farm.  This individual should be someone who has at least 3 solid years farming, experience managing a budget, experience working with volunteers or other helpers, and is someone who genuinely enjoys engaging with people of all ages.  Because LCF is a small start-up, the ideal candidate would be flexible, creative, innovative, and enjoy working in an entrepreneurial environment. While LCF is based on a traditional farming model, we encourage and wish to explore innovative farming techniques.  The Farmer reports directly the Farm Oversight Committee who will be responsible for keeping LCF’s Board of Directors abreast of farm progress.  The Board of Directors, aided by volunteer committees, will manage marketing, fundraising, educational programming, volunteer coordination, and hunger relief efforts, with strategic input from the farmer.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a unique farm-in-a-forest setting, and to help grow a community farm.

Location:  New England Forestry Foundation 32 Foster Street, Littleton, MA 01460
