Red Fire Farm Job Postings

1 – Field Crew

Red Fire Farm, a leader in organic veggie production, is looking for healthy, happy, hardworking individuals to join its power crew of harvest supervisors in beautiful Montague, Massachusetts this season. Candidates should have at least a year of previous farming experience and must be passionate about changing the food system.

Red Fire has 100 acres in cultivation. We grow just about every veggie that can be grown in this climate; this season we’re expanding our operation to include ginger, shitakes and tree fruit. Our main business is CSA: we have 1,500+ members around the state. But we also sell produce at our farm stands, farmers markets and to wholesale customers big and small, including Wegman’s supermarket chain. We are dedicated to a seriously high quality product and hold a deep belief in organic practices. We’re a large production farm with the heart and soul of a tiny operation.

We hire only domestic workers on our farm and many members of our crew tend to be recent graduates from the five colleges in the Pioneer Valley. It’s a warm, wonderful family. This is a farm where you can take on a good deal of responsibility fairly quickly, if you want it; you can grow into a leadership position and have a real stake in helping us refine the work we do. Our goal is to make this farming thing truly sustainable — for everyone involved!

Please send a letter of interest and a resume to jobs@redfirefarm.com. Starting pay is $10/hr plus unlimited access to our produce. Year-round work is available. Twice weekly farm lunch is served from June-October.

 2 – Market assistant

Red Fire Farm, an organic veggie farm with more than 100 acres in cultivation, is looking for passionate local foodies to work at our farmer’s market booths this spring, summer and fall. We’re looking to fill four positions that will start in Montague every Tuesday and then travel to our Springfield or Boston farmers’ markets.

If you’re outgoing, have an artistic eye for display and are happy to talk about how best to cook/eat fresh veggies, please consider applying! Candidates must be able to lift 50lbs repeatedly without injury and commit for the duration of the market season (May through Thanksgiving).

Our market assistants begin their day early at the farm in Montague. They load a box truck with market infrastructure and produce and setup in a timely way before the start of a market. At the end of each market, assistants return to the farm and unload their vehicles.

Market days are long and full of hard work, but these are coveted positions on the farm: the markets we work are a lot of fun, people love interacting with the public and bring back really useful feedback for the rest of the crew.

Compensation is $10/hr plus all the veggies you can eat! This is a one day a week position on Tuesdays. Please e-mail jobs@redfirefarm.com with a cover letter, resume, and three references.

3 – PROCESSING AND QUALITY CONTROL SUPERVISOR

Red Fire Farm, a leader in organic farming with more than 100 acres in cultivation in the Pioneer Valley, is seeking to hire a Processing and Quality Control Supervisor for our Packing Shed. Applications must have previous farming or food production experience, be passionate about local agriculture, and have a natural knack for details and organization. Packing Shed Supervisors play key roles on the farm: everything harvested on the farm is brought to the packing shed, where it’s washed, packed and sorted for our 1,500+ member CSA, farm stands, farmer’s markets and wholesale orders. Through this role you will be routing hundreds of thousands of pounds of local food to good homes around our state. Shed supervisors are responsible for tracking quality standards, enforcing sanitation practices, and tracking order fulfillment throughout the daily harvest. As such, the shed supervisors need to know what produce is coming in from our harvest crews each day, how it needs to be handled and packed and exactly where it’s going. Supervisors do much of the washing and packing each day, with support from a crew assigned to the shed.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Help loading trucks destined for our CSA distributions and wholesale deliveries
  • Organizing packing supplies in our barn, and keeping supplies stocked and tidy
  • Communicating regularly with our harvest manager and sales manager
  • Ability to jump in and help with aspects of the harvest
  • Managing the crew assigned to help each day in the packing shed
  • Managing bulk storage crops in our root cellar and coolers

Other qualifications:

  • Ability to lift 50-75 pounds
  • Knowledge of diverse vegetable varieties
  • Knowledge of quality standards and packing techniques
  • Experience with pallet jacks and forklifts — tractors are a bonus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Leadership and communication skills
  • Positive attitude

Other perks of the job include:

  • Year-round access to delicious, organic produce
  • Fresh air and exercise
  • An open, friendly environment where your feedback is welcomed

This is a demanding job, but a crucial one on the farm. We are seeking responsible, experienced candidates who are up for the challenge, pace and mental exercise that comes with this role. There are two supervisor positions that work a split schedule and we are looking to fill the 10am-8:30pm shift to cover the full packing day at the farm. Hours in off-season would be slightly different.

Year-round positions at $12-13/hr based on experience. Please send applications, received on a rolling basis. Seeking candidates that can start asap. Open until filled.

 4 – Farm Cook

Red Fire Farm, an organic veggie farm just down the road from the Book Mill, is looking for a foodie to prep crew lunch this summer and educate our customers about how to make the most local produce.

During our main growing season, the farm cook provides (vegetarian) lunch twice a week for our crew of roughly 35 hungry people. The cook works inside the farmhouse kitchen, using fresh ingredients from our fields as well as grocery items purchased in bulk at Green Fields Market.

Your challenge as cook is to work within a set budget when designing these meals, and ordering items to supplement farm veggies.

Part of Red Fire Farm’s mission is to not only grow great produce, but also to educate people about how to cook and utilize farm fresh produce. Our cook is also tasked with leading cooking demos at farmers markets and at our farm stands in Granby and Montague.

The cook may also be involved with preserving some of our produce for winter markets — freezing fruit, veggies and possibly canning/pickling. If you have some ideas and initiative in this area, we want to hear them!

And the cook will definitely be involved in our main farm events: Strawberry Soiree (a dinner in June); Tomato Festival (a giant party in August) and Harvest Festival (an intimate gathering in October).

The ideal candidate will have a sincere interest in local agriculture, food, vegetables, community education, and enjoy vegetarian cooking.

This is a seasonal position starting in April or May and it runs steadily through October.

Compensation: Hourly wage of $10.00/hr plus unlimited access to delicious, organic produce. Other perks include fresh air, a beautiful working environment and lots of positive feedback from a grateful crew.

Please send references, resume, and cover letter with details about previous cooking experience, any examples of recipes you have improvised.
