Job Summary:
The Rock Creek Learning Garden is a 3.6 acre production-based educational farm. The Learning Garden promotes interdisciplinary academic achievement, leadership development and sustainable food systems through experiential education, and produces over 10,000 lbs of food each year. The Learning Garden is home to ~1 acre in annual food and flower production, as well as a 60+ tree orchard, perennial fruits, a community garden, worm nursery, earthen oven and more.

The Learning Garden Coordinator will be responsible for garden planning and management including creating and coordinating planting, maintenance work, and harvest and distribution schedules; program management including coordinating volunteers and garden staff; operating within and managing a budget; oversight and maintenance of all garden equipment, tools, and supplies, fundraising activities, and event planning; collaborating with other divisions, departments, students and faculty to coordinate student learning opportunities, community partnership projects and community-based learning activities; and working with college and community entities to sell and/or donate all food grown in the Learning Garden, including coordinating our campus farm stand and working with PCC Food Services to increase food sales.

Paid Leave:

“Learning Garden Coordinator” is the working title for this position; the formal title in the PCC job classification system is “Instructional Support Technician IV”

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Garden planning and management including creating and coordinating planting, maintenance work, and harvest and distribution schedules.
2. Program management including coordinating volunteers and garden staff; operating within and managing a budget; oversight and maintenance of all garden equipment, tools, and supplies, fundraising activities, and event planning.
3. Collaboration with other divisions, departments, students and faculty to coordinate student learning opportunities, community partnership projects and community-based learning activities.
4. Work with college and community entities to sell and/or donate all food grown in the Learning Garden, including coordinating our campus farm stand and working with PCC Food Services to increase food sales.
5. Offer occasional workshops and/or classes to the PCC community.
6. Support and continue to create new and innovative strategies to address food insecurity on campus and in our community.
7. Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with colleagues, students and community members.
8. Track data and share results via presentations and reports for local, state, and national entities.
9. Represent the work of the garden at local, state and national conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline appropriate to the instructional support.
Three years of experience in the technical area are required; experience performing the duties of the position may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Must have proven written oral communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform.
Proven ability to lead others to lead others and evaluate performance.

Special/Preferred Qualifications:
-Preference will be given to applicants with a degree or certification in agriculture or related field
-Demonstrated experience recruiting, training, mentoring and supervising staff and volunteers.
-Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and practices of production gardening and farming.
-Demonstrated experience working with students and faculty in a learning environment.
-Experience teaching, training, and/or facilitating learning for adults.
-Experience working in post-secondary environment coordinating a learning garden or farm.
-Experience in business operations such as managing sales, marketing, outreach to customers, and other related tasks
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all work

– This position is included in the bargaining agreement between Portland Community College and the Portland Community College Federation of Classified Employees (PCCFCE). Employment in this position will require, as a condition of employment, payment of monthly union dues or a monthly fair share fee in lieu of dues through automatic payroll deduction. Probationary period will be in accordance with Article 13 of the Classified Agreement. Current Classified employees are encouraged to review Article 15 for salary placement guidelines.
