2017 Farm Crew Job Description
Shekomeko Farms is a new and expanding small-scale diversified organic farm in the hamlet of Shekomeko, NY, near Millbrook and Millerton. We are producing a diverse array of certified-organic vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, edible flowers, micro-greens, berries, fruit and honey. The primary goal of Shekomeko Farms is to provide delicious and thoughtfully curated produce and flowers directly to consumers both locally and in New York City. Our growing philosophy is based on best ecological practices for soil health and biodiversity, including cover cropping and low-till methods.
We focus on growing unique varieties selected for optimal flavor and work closely with a number of chefs to optimize our crop and variety mix. This season we will sell at farmers markets, local restaurants and stores, and a small CSA. We are also experimenting with advanced value-added processing and food preservation techniques in our on-site facility.
Shekomeko Farms is looking to fill multiple crew positions for the 2017 growing season, with potential for rapid advancement and year-round employment. We are looking for self-motivated individuals to join our farm team who are passionate about growing food and want to quickly take on management responsibilities. Given the start up nature of our operation, farmers will need to be able to efficiently perform a variety of job functions with high energy and a good sense of humor in all weather conditions alone or in a small group. Areas of work and responsibility will primarily be in production and may include propagation, planting, direct seeding, field prep, tractor work, equipment maintenance, cultivation, irrigation, trellising and harvest. In addition, motivated crew members will have the opportunity to expand into sales through delivery, both locally and to New York City, and farmers market sales.
Individuals must have strong organizational skills, be detail oriented and be able to streamline workflow. They must be able to follow all operational procedures to ensure we maintain quality and consistent production. Applicants should be able to lift and carry 50 lbs, and ideally have at least one season of experience on a farm. They should have reliable transportation to and from the farm, as well as workwear for all seasons. Availability to occasionally work weekends for markets and farm chores is preferred. Experience with tractors, equipment maintenance, construction and/or fruit production are all pluses.
Work is seasonal, full time from April to early November, with longer work hours in the high season. There may be opportunities for year round employment. Pay scale starts at $13-15/hour for less experienced crew member positions. Higher pay scale available for more experienced individuals. Part time applicants may be considered, particularly for farmer’s market work.
