Job Description: Point Lookout Assistant Farmer

Job Summary:  A year round (or Seasonal) Assistant Farmer position will work alongside and under the direction of the Farm Manager.  Responsibilities include all aspects of general growing  operations of a certified organic farm, including compliance of work and food safety regulations.

The Farm at athenahealth Point Lookout is nestled among 387 acres of our Coastal Mountain Retreat and is a diverse operation that provides:

  • Certified, Organic  Produce and farm fresh eggs  to our  busy catering kitchen and café
  • Educational programming and participation days for our parent company and other clients
  • Farm Dinners and Open House events  for both the public and private clients
  • Enhancements to  the stay of all guests at our Midcoast Mountain Retreat
  • A welcoming  farm experience for all visitors

Our growing space is comprised of{ 3} 30’x48’ mobile high tunnels, {1}  30’x48’ propagation house , 1 acre of cultivated herbs, flowers, and vegetables, and small scale plantings of fruits and berries.   The Farm has, but is not limited to,  4 resident rescue goats, 30-40 laying hens, a few snail and slug eating laying ducks, and 2 Italian Honey Bee colonies.

Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Previous certified organic or sustainable  growing experience with a good understanding of soil structure, plant health, disease and pest identification and remedy, drip irrigation systems,  and  passion for growing beautiful food.
  • Experience in high tunnel production and maintenance.
  • Daily care of farm animals and fowl.
  • Safe and efficient operation of small farm machinery and tools.  Mostly hand and manual tools used.
  • Meet the physical demands required to successfully perform the essential functions of the job such as: walking, standing, running, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, stooping , carrying, and lifting   50 lbs. minimum. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Work quickly, efficiently, and repetitively in all weather conditions.
  • Experience or interest in no-till farming, hugelkultur, carbon sequestration, or other innovative techniques.
  • Ability to confidently lead and facilitate educational programs alongside Farm Manager for our parent company and other clients.
  • Participate in Farm events, both public and private.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills with the public, farm team, guests, and others throughout the mountain.
  • Must be able to keep a clean and tidy work area and surroundings.

The Assistant Farmer will be expected to follow direction, work independently and carefully, be pleasant to all guests, be observant about surroundings, be resourceful and efficient, be diligent about the care and appearance of our farm and mountain,   and be available and dependable to meet  the needs of the farm, including weekend, night and possible holiday shifts.
