Gardener – 2017 growing season
D Acres of New Hampshire, a nonprofit Organic Farm & Educational Homestead located in rural Dorchester, NH, seeks a gardener for the 2017 growing season. The gardener will work with D Acres staff, residents and volunteers as a manager to care for the gardens. First and foremost, we are looking for a person that enjoys gardening. We appreciate a strong work ethic and a high level of motivation & self direction. Due to the nature of the position, applicants must have experience working with plants. Full growing season experience is necessary. The applicant should also have a willingness to commit to employment at least until November 2017.
Duties will include care and maintenance of 2 acre vegetable no till concept hand tool powered annual garden and 2 acres of forest garden in process. Specifically there will be seeding, irrigating, weeding and harvesting responsibilities. Also harvesting and dehydrating tea plants and herbs; sheet mulching, and division in the perennial gardens. Our farm consists of 180 acres of land, mostly forest. The farm serves as an educational center, offering workshops, residencies, a film series, and community events designed to promote sustainable living alternatives. We grow a nice variety of annual vegetables, mainly for onsite consumption. Our largest crops are garlic, potatoes, squash and apples. The gardener will be responsible for providing food to the kitchen and also coordinate the workers whether volunteers or residents.
The goal is to provide a demonstration of a community farm system which maximizes food production with minimal inputs and strategic use of resources. Although we will always have substantial annual gardens, we are committed to creating areas throughout the farm that produce food, medicine and craft materials perpetually with less and less maintenance throughout the years. Our investment in plants and labor now are designed to serve the community well into the future.
We seek a person that understands this vision. We have a no-till system and prefer to design garden beds that flow with the contours of the land. Our gardening philosophy is inspired by permaculture, French intensive, biodynamic and lasagna gardening. A salary of $750 per month plus room and board is available for this position. In addition to 40+ hours of gardening per week, the gardener will also be asked to participate in the communal contract, which entails one night of cooking per week, 2-4 hours of household chores, and community meetings once a week. Accommodations vary, but generally residents live in treehouses in the woods.
