Position Summary

The Field Crops Production Manager is responsible for the supervision of day-to-day production activities of field crop operations. Duties include but are not limited to planting, cultivation, harvest, and post harvest handling. She/he will also participate in annual crop planning activities. The Field Crops Production Manager will work under the direction of the Farm Manager to provide in-field training and guidance for the work crew and ProFarmer students, and to ensure quality and food safety. The Field Crops Production Manager will also participate and oversee the collection of production records in conjunction with the Assistant Farm Manager. As part of the Farm Hub management team, the Field Crops Production Manager will work to implement clear operational policies and procedures and promote a compassionate working and learning environment for all staff, trainees, educators, and guests.

The Hudson Valley Farm Hub is a non-profit center for resilient agriculture based on 1,255 acres of prime farmland in Hurley, NY. Founded in 2013, the Farm Hub provides professional farmer training, hosts and supports agricultural research, and demonstrates equitable and ecologically regenerative practices. Our vision is for a collaborative regional food system that meets the economic and social needs of our communities while working in harmony with natural systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Farm Operations

  • Manage the production of field crops, corn, soybeans, small grains, and assistance with ecological stewardship
  • Assistance with whole farm planning, coordination and management of applied research projects, and upkeep and maintenance of facilities and equipment
  • Develop and implement short and long-term work plans
  • Provide support to the ProFarmer education program and small grains research program
  • Assist with on-site training of employees and ProFarmer trainees
  • Participate in farm tours, twilight meetings, and field days as needed
  • Assist the Farm Manager in monitoring budget and expenses
  • Keep up to date with new advances in applied farming technologies
  • Assist with daily maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Help to promote and maintain good relationships with customers, neighbors, and partners
  • Help to align all farm operations with the Farm Hub’s long term strategic plan in collaboration with the Farm Hub management team
  • Help to maintain GAP and organic certifications
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to the mission of the Farm Hub
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Farm Hub team to train and supervise staff
  • Serve as public spokesperson as needed

Required Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in successful production of field crops and cover crops, preferably using organic or biodynamic methods
  • Demonstrated success in the management and supervision of staff
  • Experience with upkeep and maintenance of facilities and farm equipment
  • Experience in the maintenance of crop production, GAP, pesticide applications, organic certification, soil health, and/or other production related documentation
  • Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to have a flexible schedule with weekend hours as required
  • Written and verbal proficiency in English
  • Clean driving record and access to reliable transportation

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a work environment of mutual respect, team building, and collaboration
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with people across different backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Written and verbal proficiency in Spanish
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of the Northeast farming community, especially Hudson Valley
  • Knowledge of or a willingness to learn how to lead employee trainings using popular education/participatory learning methods
