Aldermere Farm, a landmark of mid-coast Maine, is one of the world’s premier breeders of Belted Galloway cattle. The 136-acre farm is owned and managed by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a statewide land conservation organization dedicated to protecting the scenic beauty, outdoor recreational opportunities, ecological diversity, and working landscapes of the Maine coast. The Trust maintains Aldermere as a working farm and educational center, helping visitors deepen their appreciation for land conservation and sustainable agriculture.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the General Manager, manages and supervises all cattle related functions of Aldermere Farm including feed and nutrition, breeding and calving and all records and inventories related to the cattle and stored forage. Will support the general manager with cattle and semen sales, youth and adult programming. Will work collaboratively with other farm staff to maintain the building structures, fence lines and forage production.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Will maintain or oversee all cattle database records and inventories for the farm.
  • Support the General Manager to determine Aldermere’s genetic and performance needs.
  • Manages plans for breeding, selling, and sourcing genetics to maintain Aldermere’s world class standing as well as to generate revenue.
  • Responsible for the herd’s health and must be aware of bovine health issues, monitor and detect problems early and treat effectively. Will monitor pregnancies and calving and possess the ability to undertake calving issues that arrive including assisting with births.
  • Must understand the nutrition needs of cattle of all ages and insure they are provided the correct forage, grain, and minerals as needed.
  • Budget responsibilities include items such as cattle purchases and grain, minerals, veterinary care, and programs.
  • Will be responsible for managing cattle on pasture land and feedlots.
  • Support the 4-H Club by creating a positive learning environment, support parents and volunteers to help manage events, finances and fundraising related to their activities. This includes local, regional and national venues. Must make sure that tasks performed by the 4-H members are done safely and efficiently.
  • Will lead our Farmhands youth program.
  • Will supervise assigned college interns or Apprentices each year in fulfilling the educational goals of the participants and using them to the best advantage in farm operations.
  • Will select and show a group of cattle each year to be shown at local, regional and national fairs and exhibitions to maintain Aldermere’s legacy as a worldwide premier herd of Belted Galloways.
  • Will interact on a regular basis with the public and must represent MCHT well at all times.
  • Will make sure that Aldermere staff and volunteers adhere to our high standards for animal welfare.
  • Will manage volunteers in many aspects of farm operations.
  • Will assist with and support other public/community events and farm programs.
  • Will work with the Farm Operations Manager to maintain the buildings and structures. Due to overlap with Farm Operations staff, will need to communicate and collaborate very well to ensure that cattle needs are met and to assist with other operation tasks as well.
  • Able to operate equipment including tractors (over 100 H.P.) and trucks and trailers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) due to hauling cattle. If not held, must be able to pass CDL test.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Will supervise 4-H members, seasonal farm labor, Interns, Apprentices, and volunteers. Responsibilities will include involvement in interviewing and scheduling, training and development, scheduling, counseling and discipline, termination, evaluating performance, and other related roles.

REQUIREMENTS:

On farm housing is required to fulfill the duties of this position, and CDL is required for hauling cattle.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Agricultural, education or business management degree will be helpful, but real life practical experience most necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent project management, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Strong history of cattle management and their health care
  • Excellent Interpersonal oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive public relations and to interact with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to communicate clear expectations to staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to coordinate projects with peers in the organization collaboratively.
  • Computer skills necessary to create and maintain spreadsheets, databases
  • Understanding of light carpentry and simple mechanics
  • Commercial Driver’s License

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work both indoors and outdoors in all year around conditions. Work will require significant physical strength and endurance. Some significant care will need to be taken while working around potentially aggressive cattle and dangerous equipment. Will be required to work in every type of weather condition and at any point day or night. Must be able to lift hay bales up to 75 pounds and 50 pound bales on a repetitive basis for up to 8 hours.

Will be office time to create and maintain inventories and related records as well as phone and e-mail for customer contacts.
