The Good Cheer Food Bank is seeking a second apprentice to round out our seasonal garden team! Apprentices are key players in our Fresh Food on the Table Program, which seeks to create a zero-waste food bank that champions fresh, local produce. They will assist the Garden Manager in managing 1.5 acres of mixed vegetable production and all farm and garden tasks including seed starting, greenhouse management, cultivating, weeding, harvesting, composting, and record keeping; and some non-profit management like volunteer coordination, outreach, fundraising, and aspects of event planning. The apprentices will also have the opportunity to assist the Produce Manager in the Food Bank during peak harvest season with processing excess produce (canning, freezing, drying etc.), sorting donations and keeping the store refrigerator stocked with local goods. Apprentices will also participate in volunteer work parties at partner sites: South Whidbey School Farms and South Whidbey Tilth.
Some farming or gardening experience appreciated, but enthusiasm for growing and sharing food is a must have. Candidates must also be hard working and practical; flexible and responsive to changing circumstances due to weather and unexpected events; willing to maintain high standards of communication, follow-through, and collaboration; have the self-motivation and integrity necessary to manage their time effectively; reliable with the ability to shift gears from farmer to non-profit employee. Ability to lift 50lbs.
Apprentice work an average 35 hours per week, seasonally variable. There will occasionally be weekend work watering starts, opening and closing hoop houses, assisting at special events, and gleaning produce from the Saturday farmers market. Responsibilities will be shared with other apprentices and with the Garden Manager.
