Positon: Farm Assistant
Total hours: 16 hrs/week
Weekly Schedule: T/W/Th 8am-5pm (one day of week flexible); plus Friday 8am- 5pm
Start/ End: May-October 2018
Compensation: $15.00/hour plus a weekly share of fresh vegetables, fruits, and flowers

About the organization: The HEAL Project (THP) is a unique organization providing hands-on programming that instills healthy lifestyle habits in elementary school children while inspiring environmental and agricultural awareness through comprehensive, interactive curriculum. Our vision is a world where everyone understands the connection between our food, our health and our environment.
The San Mateo County School Farm (SMCSF), operated by THP, is a 2 acre diversified fruit and vegetable farm in El Granada, California. SMCSF grows annual vegetables, berries, cut flowers, and culinary herbs. Produce is primarily used in THP’s educational programming and sold to local restaurants and at the Coastside Farmers’ Market. Over 1,000 student visit SMCSF annually to learn about sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and nature connection.
Gain experience in all components of organic vegetable, fruit, and flower production in a coastal climate.
Contribute to site maintenance, management, and development at The San Mateo County School Farm.
Assist in the management of a farmers’ market stand, community supported agriculture share program, and restaurant sales.
Lead work projects with volunteers and community members.
The Farm Assistant will work alongside The San Mateo County School Farm Manager for a full growing season. Tasks will include propagation, sowing/ transplanting, irrigation maintenance, mowing, rototilling, fertility management, composting, weeding, pest management, harvesting, postharvest handling (washing, packaging and storage of crops) and marketing a variety of crops. Farm Assistant will learn the basic systems and skills needed for row cropping on a small scale diversified farm, as well as many gardening and landscaping skills. In addition, this position will play a key role in helping harvest and prepare crops for sale through a CSA program and farmers’ market stand. They will be expected to assist in keeping the farm and the outdoor classroom clean and safe, and support the development of other educational infrastructure at the farm. The Farm Assistant will occasionally help with volunteers, community members, and student groups. Creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and enthusiasm are highly encouraged in this key support role.
Must be physically fit, and able to lift 50 pounds safely. Applicant must pass a live scan background check and a TB test. No previous farming experience is required for this position. Applicant should expect to learn about how to operate an educational fruit and vegetable farm in beautiful Half Moon Bay, CA.
