Responsibilities:

  • Set up and breakdown Farmstand each day, including produce displays

  • Operate cash register and scales, answer questions, and bring awareness to additional farm programming as appropriate

Qualifications:

  • Be willing and able to work in all weather conditions, stand for long periods of time, and bend and lift up to 50 pounds

Employment Dates:

  • August 15 to October 30, with some training required prior to August 15
  • Farmstand hours are 11am to 7pm Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Weekend availability is a must, and flexible schedules will be considered

Compensation:

  • $11 to $12.50 per hour, dependent on experience

Land’s Sake is currently looking for a Farmstand Manager (an approximately 7 month position) to run the retail side of the Farmstand, as well as oversee the hiring, scheduling and management of summer Farmstand staff. The seasonal Farmstand serves as the hub of the farm from June through October, and each year we assemble an awesome team to sell our vegetables, guide and educate our community, occasionally battle chipmunks, and have a lot of fun doing it. Being the face of the farm, the proper running of the Farmstand is key in maintaining our relations with the public and helping coordinate many of the events that we hold on the farm every year. The Farmstand Manager reports directly to the Executive Director and collaborates with the Farm Manager and Education staff.

A successful Farmstand Manager will like people and being outside as well as be efficient and detail oriented in their work. In order to communicate with customers as to how they can become involved with activities within the organization, farmstand staff are trained about the farm’s many offerings. Great customer service skills, an ability to work quickly and efficiently, and a good sense of humor are vital this position. Interest in sustainable agriculture, local food systems, and/or cooking is a plus.

Job Description

  • First and foremost, the Farmstand Manager is the representative of the farm store and should be bright, cheerful and excel in customer service and salesmanship.
  • Hires, trains, schedules, and manages all Farmstand labor. The manager should instruct the seasonal staff in what the farm has to offer and instill in them excellent customer service skills. Every Farmstand employee is a sales person.
  • On a daily basis, sets up and breaks down the Farmstand and maintains produce quality throughout the day (i.e. temperature control, hydration).
  • Communicates with the Farm Manager regarding what will be available for sale. The Farmstand Manager keeps the produce displays up to the agreed upon standards.
  • Oversees the ordering, procuring, and maintaining of inventory for the Farmstand and update two inventory systems, weekly.
  • Learns produce varieties, growing standards and Farmstand products and works with the Farm Manager to select produce and quantities for the Farmstand.
  • Operates cash register, scales, and occasionally share cash counting duties
  • Ensures that unsurpassed service is being given by Farmstand employees
  • Handles complex customer service issues.
  • Understands what is selling and what is not through analyzing and interpreting sales reports. Responsible for bringing in new items to increase profits and cutting items that do not sell.
  • Markets the items available in the Farmstand by creating signage, weekly email communications and posting on Facebook, Twitter and our signage outside the store.
  • Updates the POS system and understands its inner workings to maintain proper records of sales. This also includes understanding what we should be charging for our products.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the Farmstand, including the area around the stand.
  • Packs up the Farmstand for the season at the end of October.
  • Plans and executes the Pre-Thanksgiving sale for November.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of retail experience as a sales person and 1 year of experience in management.
  • Flexibility in your schedule with the ability to work at least one weekend day per week.
  • Prior experience with a CSA or the wide variety of vegetables we grow is necessary. Should be a big supporter of sustainable, integrated and organic growing practices for vegetables.
  • Must enjoy a fast-paced environment when we are busy and have the ability to create projects and tasks for those times when we are slow.
  • Able to repeatedly bend and lift 50 lbs throughout the day.
  • Be willing and able to work in all weather conditions, stand for long periods of time

Hours and Compensation

The Farmstand opens the first week of June. It is open 6 days a week through the end of October. There is one additional sales day in November.  This position begins in early- to mid-May to clean and stock up the Farmstand and continues as a full-time, 30-40hrs/wk, position until the stand closes at the end of October. There is some flexibility with the schedule depending on the staff schedule, but the Farmstand Manager is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the farmstand is staffed during all open hours. There is the possibility of hiring an Assistant Farmstand Manager to help fill necessary hours. Compensation is hourly and commensurate with experience.

ABOUT US: Applecrest Farm Orchards is a 100+ acre diversified fruit and veggie farm located in Hampton Falls, NH. In addition to an on-site retail farm stand, the farm operates a one-hundred member Community Supported Agriculture (C.S.A.) program, attends seven local farmers markets every week of the growing season and is a strong supplier to local restaurants, groceries and schools. As a sustainable producer of over two-hundred unique varieties of tree fruits, berries, vegetables, flowers and herbs, Applecrest is a cornerstone of the seacoast-area food shed.

Market and C.S.A. work involves a lot of packing, loading, unloading, setting-up and then breaking down all manner of items, many of them heavy. To boot, the majority of the work takes place out of doors, often in heat, cold, wind and/or rain. Candidates MUST be of a hearty nature, in excellent physical health and able to lift up to 40 pounds repeatedly.

Field Production Assistant and Equipment Operator
Atlas Farm is a 95-acre, certified organic, vegetable farm located in Deerfield, MA. We grow and market produce year-round through wholesale accounts, farmers’ markets and our own retail farm store. The Field Production Assistant and Equipment Operator position is focused on vegetable crop production including field preparation, planting, cultivation, pest and disease control, and other production practices. This position is heavily centered on equipment work and applicants should have a minimum of 2 years experience operating tractors and other farm equipment and a knowledge of vegetable production practices in New England. Applicants should also have an aptitude for record keeping, calculating for fertilizer and pest control applications, and trouble shooting and maintaining equipment. Greenhouse Assistant

The greenhouse assistant is a full-time, year-round position at the farm and plays a critical role in the farm’s greenhouse production. The primary focus of this position is assisting in the operation and management of the farm’s 6 greenhouses and 4 high tunnel structures and all production related activities in these areas, especially during the main greenhouse season from March through July. During the other months of the year, the greenhouse assistant may also participate in other areas of the farm including field production, harvest and packing house work, and building projects. Daily job responsibilities include: maintaining seeding and transplanting schedules, assisting with the management of a crew of 4-6 workers in greenhouse related tasks, monitoring crop needs including fertility, water, pest management, and climate control and coordinating with the greenhouse manager on crop management tasks in these areas. The schedule for this position averages approximately 45 hours/ week over the calendar year with seasonal highs and lows. The typical schedule is 5 1/2 – 6 days/week (6am-6pm) during the main greenhouse season from March through July, 5 days/week from August through October (6am-5pm), and 4 days/week from November-February (8am-4pm). About the Job:

As a Produce Supervisor, you’ll work collaboratively with a small team on the day-to-day functioning of our Food Hub. You’ll have a range of duties that help get great local food to our customers, detailed below. Experience and a passion for sustainable produce is required for this role.

Our Food Hub operates seven days a week, from 4am to 1am. The ideal candidate will have flexible availability as we anticipate working days and times will evolve over the coming months.

Major Responsibilities

  • Properly receive product as well as greet delivery drivers and farmers who deliver the goods and supervise staff acting as the Inbound Operations Lead.
  • Quality control at receiving and throughout duration of product storage in our Foodhub
  • Practice excellent produce handling to ensure high quality and delicious fresh produce.
  • Inventory cycle counts and FIFO procedures
  • Triage inventory issues, including placing last-minute purchase orders to ensure customers get everything they ordered
  • Prepare product for delivery to customers
  • Stock and organize on-hand product and packing materials
  • Communicate produce quality feedback  to internal teams to ensure a great customer experience
  • Work to find creative solutions to reduce waste
  • Taste delicious seasonal produce to ensure quality

    • Managing Marketplace product listings that vary by weight
    • Managing catalog products that yield multiple Marketplace products (bunched vs loose beets e.g.)
  • Bundle management and other merch tools to reduce spoilage
  • Review spoilage metrics and communicate them to the purchasing team and staff
  • Manage photo process (coordinating product shoots, matching photo to current product)
  • Create and document SOPs for current processes within Produce Team
  • Implement the weekly produce team accountability reports to improve overall produce quality and operational efficiency, take disciplinary action if necessary
  • Developing & implementing training programs
  • Cross-team communication around new process roll-outs, changes, etc

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.  College degree a plus.
  • 3 or more years of produce experience.  Work in the areas of farming, farmers’ markets, grocery a plus
