Field Production Assistant and Equipment Operator
Atlas Farm is a 95-acre, certified organic, vegetable farm located in Deerfield, MA. We grow and market produce year-round through wholesale accounts, farmers’ markets and our own retail farm store. The Field Production Assistant and Equipment Operator position is focused on vegetable crop production including field preparation, planting, cultivation, pest and disease control, and other production practices. This position is heavily centered on equipment work and applicants should have a minimum of 2 years experience operating tractors and other farm equipment and a knowledge of vegetable production practices in New England. Applicants should also have an aptitude for record keeping, calculating for fertilizer and pest control applications, and trouble shooting and maintaining equipment. The Field Production Assistant works very closely with the farm owner and the rest of the farm management staff and should have strong communication skills, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and ability to adapt quickly to the ever changing farm environment. This is a year-round position requiring up to 60 hours per week during the main season of April-November and decreasing to 20-30 hours per week from December-March. Greenhouse Assistant
Atlas Farm is a 95-acre, certified organic, vegetable farm located in Deerfield, MA. We grow and market produce year-round through wholesale accounts, farmers’ markets and our own retail farm store. The greenhouse assistant is a full-time, year-round position at the farm and plays a critical role in the farm’s greenhouse production. The primary focus of this position is assisting in the operation and management of the farm’s 6 greenhouses and 4 high tunnel structures and all production related activities in these areas, especially during the main greenhouse season from March through July. During the other months of the year, the greenhouse assistant may also participate in other areas of the farm including field production, harvest and packing house work, and building projects. Daily job responsibilities include: maintaining seeding and transplanting schedules, assisting with the management of a crew of 4-6 workers in greenhouse related tasks, monitoring crop needs including fertility, water, pest management, and climate control and coordinating with the greenhouse manager on crop management tasks in these areas. The schedule for this position averages approximately 45 hours/ week over the calendar year with seasonal highs and lows. The typical schedule is 5 1/2 – 6 days/week (6am-6pm) during the main greenhouse season from March through July, 5 days/week from August through October (6am-5pm), and 4 days/week from November-February (8am-4pm). About the Job:

As a Produce Supervisor, you’ll work collaboratively with a small team on the day-to-day functioning of our Food Hub. You’ll have a range of duties that help get great local food to our customers, detailed below. Experience and a passion for sustainable produce is required for this role.

Our Food Hub operates seven days a week, from 4am to 1am. The ideal candidate will have flexible availability as we anticipate working days and times will evolve over the coming months.

Major Responsibilities

  • Properly receive product as well as greet delivery drivers and farmers who deliver the goods and supervise staff acting as the Inbound Operations Lead.
  • Quality control at receiving and throughout duration of product storage in our Foodhub
  • Practice excellent produce handling to ensure high quality and delicious fresh produce.
  • Inventory cycle counts and FIFO procedures
  • Triage inventory issues, including placing last-minute purchase orders to ensure customers get everything they ordered
  • Prepare product for delivery to customers
  • Stock and organize on-hand product and packing materials
  • Communicate produce quality feedback  to internal teams to ensure a great customer experience
  • Work to find creative solutions to reduce waste
  • Taste delicious seasonal produce to ensure quality
  • Manage produce storage conditions, systems and equipment to ensure optimal quality and shelf life
  • Help develop daily and weekly schedule for Produce Team activities
  • Monitor and document team attendance and performance, then deliver feedback or disciplinary action if necessary
  • Provide guidance and support to Produce Team members in the completion of daily tasks

Special Projects & General Support for overall goals of Produce program; may include:

  • Ordering & Merchandising Support
    • Placing orders
    • Managing Marketplace product listings that vary by weight
    • Managing catalog products that yield multiple Marketplace products (bunched vs loose beets e.g.)
  • Bundle management and other merch tools to reduce spoilage
  • Review spoilage metrics and communicate them to the purchasing team and staff
  • Manage photo process (coordinating product shoots, matching photo to current product)
  • Create and document SOPs for current processes within Produce Team
  • Implement the weekly produce team accountability reports to improve overall produce quality and operational efficiency, take disciplinary action if necessary
  • Developing & implementing training programs
  • Cross-team communication around new process roll-outs, changes, etc

Land’s Sake is a nonprofit farm located in Weston, MA that strives to connect individuals to the land to build community and inspire lifelong stewardship. The seasonal Farmstand serves as the hub of the farm from June to October, and each year we assemble an awesome team to sell our vegetables, guide and educate our community, occasionally battle chipmunks, and have a lot of fun doing it.

A successful Fall Farmstand Manager will possess an interest in sustainable agriculture, local food systems, and/or cooking. They will be efficient and detail oriented in their work. As a point of contact for Land’s Sake, Farmstand staff are trained about the farm’s many offerings, in order to communicate with customers as to how they can become involved with activities within the organization. Great customer service skills, an ability to work quickly and efficiently, and a good sense of humor are vital this position.

  • Set up and breakdown Farmstand on assigned days
