Nestled against the virgin rainforest of La Cangreja National Park, Rancho Mastatal Sustainable Education Center has been teaching, exploring, and promoting techniques of living harmoniously in the landscape for 12 years. Renowned for it’s natural building and delicious culinary spreads of fresh homemade food, the Ranch offers profound, innovative and intensive internships throughout the year.  Interns will experience a rural Costa Rican community, delight in 325 acres of pristine forests and waterfalls, and participate in a working permaculture farm.

Homesteading and Agroforestry Internship

Sustainable Living and Permaculture Internship

Farm Store Manager

Berea College is currently recruiting for an individual to serve as the Farm Store Manager. The Farm Store Manager will be the primary staff member responsible for operating the Berea College Farm Store as a retail space for selling raw and value-added products from the Berea College Farm and as an educational laboratory to support active and engaged student learning about agriculture and food. The manager’s responsibilities will include operation of the retail store, development and production of value-added products, training and supervision of student workers, and coordinating with the faculty and staff of the Berea College Farm and Agriculture and Natural Resources program. This person could also be involved periodically in teaching or team-teaching a course in value-added food production if they have the appropriate credentials. Candidates should have the following: BA or BS in agriculture, food science, business, marketing, or a related area is required, MS, preferred; experience in grocery marketing and sales or restaurant operations, retail business management, and supervision and training of employees who handle food and conduct retail sales. All applicants must have knowledge of food safety, HACCP, POS systems, inventory and record-keeping for retail business with a broad understanding of agricultural sustainability and food systems. Also required is experience in MS Excel; web-based social media and a valid KY driver’s license; GAP training and a food manager/handler certification are desirable. Community Food Security Associate I:
This 900-hour Rural Health Service Corps member will start in March of 2012 and help make local, nutritious foods available to all members of our communities by facilitating institutional purchases of local farm products and leading Farm Catskills’ Harvest Days food preservation program. The Community Food Security Associate will also assist with various outreach, coordination, and youth educations programs related to strengthening the local food system and access to local foods. Living allowance of $6,050 and Segal Education Award of $2,775.

Community Food Security Associate II:
This 450 hour-Rural Health Service Corps member will start in May of 2012 and help to make local, nutritious food more available to low-income families and seniors in Delaware County, through the organic Food Bank garden at Delaware Opportunities, and meals programs including Meals on Wheels and Head Start offered at various sites around the county. The Community Food Security Associate will assist with various outreach, coordination, and youth training programs of Farm Catskills related to strengthening the local food system and access to local foods. Living allowance of $3,025 and Segal Education Award of $1,468.
