Position Description

This is a unique opportunity for someone passionate about farming and looking to gain experience in farm management.

Farm Description:  Skyline Farm is a 1.5+ acre production vegetable farm growing exclusively for Meriwether’s Restaurant using organic practices.  The farm is located northwest of Portland, OR on NW Skyline Blvd near Cornelius Pass Rd.  We are a farm crew of four during the main season, April-October.   We are energetic, entertaining, hard-working folks.

Dates:  Year -round. Starts February 1st.

Schedule:  The position is part time – Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are the required work days. Some possible work during peak season on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Work starts between 7-8am and ends between 5-6pm depending on the time of year.  We take a mid-morning break and a lunch.  During June-September we generally work 10 or more hours per day.

Duties/Activities: 

  • Management of farm crew members and tasks
  • Aiding in farm management and best practices
  • Providing general support for Farm Manager
  • Harvesting a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers
  • Fieldwork (seeding, transplanting, weeding, irrigating, trapping, etc.)
  • Washing and packing produce
  • Propagating plants in the greenhouse
  • Animal care (llamas and goats)
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Description: Point Lookout Assistant Farmer

Job Summary:  A year round (or Seasonal) Assistant Farmer position will work alongside and under the direction of the Farm Manager.  Responsibilities include all aspects of general growing  operations of a certified organic farm, including compliance of work and food safety regulations.

The Farm at athenahealth Point Lookout is nestled among 387 acres of our Coastal Mountain Retreat and is a diverse operation that provides:

  • Certified, Organic  Produce and farm fresh eggs  to our  busy catering kitchen and café
  • Educational programming and participation days for our parent company and other clients
  • Farm Dinners and Open House events  for both the public and private clients
  • Enhancements to  the stay of all guests at our Midcoast Mountain Retreat

Our growing space is comprised of{ 3} 30’x48’ mobile high tunnels, {1}  30’x48’ propagation house , 1 acre of cultivated herbs, flowers, and vegetables, and small scale plantings of fruits and berries.   The Farm has, but is not limited to,  4 resident rescue goats, 30-40 laying hens, a few snail and slug eating laying ducks, and 2 Italian Honey Bee colonies.

Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Previous certified organic or sustainable  growing experience with a good understanding of soil structure, plant health, disease and pest identification and remedy, drip irrigation systems,  and  passion for growing beautiful food.
  • Experience in high tunnel production and maintenance.
  • Daily care of farm animals and fowl.
  • Safe and efficient operation of small farm machinery and tools.  Mostly hand and manual tools used.
  • Meet the physical demands required to successfully perform the essential functions of the job such as: walking, standing, running, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, stooping , carrying, and lifting   50 lbs. minimum.   • Work quickly, efficiently, and repetitively in all weather conditions.
  • Experience or interest in no-till farming, hugelkultur, carbon sequestration, or other innovative techniques.

New Harmony Farm hiring Assistant Farmer

Newbury, Massachusetts

New Harmony Farm, LLC is seeking an assistant farmer to share the responsibility of overseeing vegetable production for the 2016 season and beyond. We are a certified organic farm, located in Newbury Massachusetts, using biological and holistic farming practices to cultivate nutrient dense produce.

The assistant farmer will work closely with the farm manager, sharing growing and harvesting responsibilities for a 60 member CSA, farmers’ market, local restaurants, and farm stand. The role will include maintaining production and harvest records, field crew management, tractor work and maintenance, farm stand management and helping train interns and volunteers.

This position is ideally suited for an individual with at least 2 to 3 years of commercial vegetable growing experience and some management experience. We are seeking an individual committed to a career in organic production agriculture. They must be able to routinely and repetitively lift 50 lbs. and complete a wide range of farm duties carefully, quickly and efficiently. A successful candidate will have a valid driver’s license, a good sense of humor, problem solving abilities, a collaborative spirit, strong organizational and record keeping skills, and the ability to work well independently and with others.

The position runs from April through November and averages 40 hours per week with one and a half to two days off including working one weekend day. The assistant farmer will work closely with the farmer and will have an educational stipend and mentee opportunities that can further develop his/her own skills and understanding of all production and business aspects of small scale, organic/biological crop production. The assistant farmer will also have the opportunity to work as part of our growing team. New Harmony is actively expanding our small scale flower, herb, berry and fruit tree crops.

Compensation will be determined based on level of experience. Farm housing and a reduced rental rate is an option and offseason employment can be negotiated with a long term commitment that could potentially lead to a farm partnership. There is also opportunity to use our resources to develop independent farm projects for additional income.

Second Nature Farm has two job openings the for the 2015 season! We are a 3.5 acre diversified vegetable and fruit farm in Norton, MA (40 min south of Boston, 20 min East of Providence).
