Aldermere Farm, a landmark of mid-coast Maine, is one of the world’s premier breeders of Belted Galloway cattle. The 136-acre farm is owned and managed by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a statewide land conservation organization dedicated to protecting the scenic beauty, outdoor recreational opportunities, ecological diversity, and working landscapes of the Maine coast. The Trust maintains Aldermere as a working farm and educational center, helping visitors deepen their appreciation for land conservation and sustainable agriculture.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the General Manager, manages and supervises all cattle related functions of Aldermere Farm including feed and nutrition, breeding and calving and all records and inventories related to the cattle and stored forage. Will support the general manager with cattle and semen sales, youth and adult programming. Will work collaboratively with other farm staff to maintain the building structures, fence lines and forage production.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Will maintain or oversee all cattle database records and inventories for the farm.
  • Support the General Manager to determine Aldermere’s genetic and performance needs.
  • Manages plans for breeding, selling, and sourcing genetics to maintain Aldermere’s world class standing as well as to generate revenue.
  • Responsible for the herd’s health and must be aware of bovine health issues, monitor and detect problems early and treat effectively. Will monitor pregnancies and calving and possess the ability to undertake calving issues that arrive including assisting with births.
  • Must understand the nutrition needs of cattle of all ages and insure they are provided the correct forage, grain, and minerals as needed.
  • Budget responsibilities include items such as cattle purchases and grain, minerals, veterinary care, and programs.
  • Will be responsible for managing cattle on pasture land and feedlots.
  • Support the 4-H Club by creating a positive learning environment, support parents and volunteers to help manage events, finances and fundraising related to their activities. This includes local, regional and national venues. Must make sure that tasks performed by the 4-H members are done safely and efficiently.
  • Will lead our Farmhands youth program.
  • Will supervise assigned college interns or Apprentices each year in fulfilling the educational goals of the participants and using them to the best advantage in farm operations.
  • Will select and show a group of cattle each year to be shown at local, regional and national fairs and exhibitions to maintain Aldermere’s legacy as a worldwide premier herd of Belted Galloways.
  • Will interact on a regular basis with the public and must represent MCHT well at all times.
  • Will make sure that Aldermere staff and volunteers adhere to our high standards for animal welfare.
  • Will manage volunteers in many aspects of farm operations.
  • Will assist with and support other public/community events and farm programs.
  • Will work with the Farm Operations Manager to maintain the buildings and structures. Due to overlap with Farm Operations staff, will need to communicate and collaborate very well to ensure that cattle needs are met and to assist with other operation tasks as well.
  • Able to operate equipment including tractors (over 100 H.P.) and trucks and trailers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) due to hauling cattle. If not held, must be able to pass CDL test.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Will supervise 4-H members, seasonal farm labor, Interns, Apprentices, and volunteers. Responsibilities will include involvement in interviewing and scheduling, training and development, scheduling, counseling and discipline, termination, evaluating performance, and other related roles.

REQUIREMENTS:

On farm housing is required to fulfill the duties of this position, and CDL is required for hauling cattle.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Agricultural, education or business management degree will be helpful, but real life practical experience most necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent project management, organizational and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Ability to promote and maintain positive public relations and to interact with a wide variety of people.

  • Computer skills necessary to create and maintain spreadsheets, databases
  • Understanding of light carpentry and simple mechanics
  • Commercial Driver’s License

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work both indoors and outdoors in all year around conditions. Work will require significant physical strength and endurance. Some significant care will need to be taken while working around potentially aggressive cattle and dangerous equipment. Will be required to work in every type of weather condition and at any point day or night. Must be able to lift hay bales up to 75 pounds and 50 pound bales on a repetitive basis for up to 8 hours.

Will be office time to create and maintain inventories and related records as well as phone and e-mail for customer contacts.

This is a permanent, full-time position with a benefits package including health insurance, vacation time, and retirement.

Maine Coast Heritage Trust is looking for a general manager for Aldermere Farm and Erickson Fields in Rockport, Maine.  We need a person who is passionate about community conservation and agriculture. The manager supervises a professional staff, and must have hands on farming experience, as well as budgeting, communications, community engagement and excellent people management skills.  This is a job for someone who wants to jump in, become engaged, and support the work of the Farm, and of Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Stewardship, and working with a professional staff, both at the Farm and throughout Maine Coast Heritage Trust, manages all aspects of operations and programming for Aldermere Farm and Erickson Fields.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages the land and resources of Aldermere Farm and Erickson Fields, including maintaining the Farm’s blue ribbon herd of cattle and its many buildings and performing tasks such as haying, wood cutting, snow removal, shingling, and other light carpentry on a seasonal or year-round basis.
  • Supervises management staff at Aldermere Farm and Erickson Fields.
  • Develops and implements programs and projects that further MCHT’s mission and meet community objectives. Identifies and creates programs related to agriculture, community well-being, etc.
  • Markets and sells cattle, beef, semen, hay, vegetables and farm equipment.
  • Develops and manages a budget of over $785,000 for Aldermere Farm and Erickson Fields. Approves most expenditures and participates in fundraising efforts.
  • Establishes and maintains effective public, consumer, and customer relations. Establishes and maintains MCHT’s presence in the community and strives to build community good will and respect for the Trust whenever possible.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises all Farm staff to ensure that responsibilities are carried out in an effective and timely manner. Assigns work and reviews performance.
  • Performs special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.
  • Long work days, including night and weekend work, are expected.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises the staff at Aldermere Farm and at Erickson Fields.  Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing and selection, training and development, adherence to safe working practices, scheduling, counseling, discipline, termination, evaluating performance, and recommending pay increases.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with seven to ten years of experience in farming and operations management and communications. Master’s Degree helpful.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to promote and maintain positive public relations and to interact with a wide variety of people.
  • Working knowledge of and on the ground experience with farm operations, budget development and administration and small business functions. Cattle breeding experience is very important.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively oversee and supervise staff and operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively operate computers and assigned software.
  • Physical ability sufficient to perform required tasks, including farm work (haying, tractor operation, cattle management).

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Some work is performed in an office environment in an old house on the Farm which may be cool in the winter. Operates computer, printer, projector and other office equipment.

Land and resource management is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires frequent walking, climbing, bending, and lifting.  Operates tractor, wood splitter, truck, and other equipment, and handles cattle, hay, etc. Ability to lift hay bales weighing up to 75 pounds and bales averaging 50 pounds on a repetitive basis. Able to operate a chainsaw to fell trees. Will be required to work with cattle and an aggressive bull possibly weighing 2000 pounds. May be called in at any time of day/night for farm emergencies.

REQUIREMENT:  To fulfill the duties of this position, on-farm housing is provided and acceptance is required.

  • Making daily observations and writing log records to document what the cattle are eating (grass, hay, minerals, etc.), what treatments were applied, cattle health & habits, grazing plan, and others as season and animal health dictates
  • Pushing out round bales by hand (with assistance when needed)
  • Loading/unloading hay (square bales) by hand
  • Fence building/repair
  • Operating farm equipment, vehicles and trailers
