Gathering Together Farm is hiring a full-time seasonal (April – November) employee to work in our vegetable cultivation program and farmers market sales. We are searching for individuals passionate about organic farming willing to work hard, efficiently, and consistently for producing and selling organic crops.

Job Description

The work schedule will be on-farm weed control operations Tuesday-Friday, and a 13 hour day on Saturday driving a box truck and selling produce at farmers markets. Successful candidates will learn nuances of weed control and market sales strategies of over 50 transplanted and direct-seeded vegetable crops.

On Tuesday – Friday, the candidate will communicate with the cultivation manager for prioritizing field tasks, and operating tools and machinery including cultivator tractors, rototillers, weed wackers, wheel & hand hoes, and propane flame weeders.

Saturdays will consist of driving a 35,000 GVW manual transmission box truck to and from the Portland Metro area, and meeting a local crew of employees to sell vegetables at farmers markets. This includes unloading the truck, setting up the booth with artistic flair, and engaging customers with tact and warmth.

Qualifications:

  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic gasoline engine function and troubleshooting.
  • Experience operating small engines and tractors.
  • General knowledge of vegetable crops.
  • Ability to drive a manual transmission truck with air brakes. The successful candidate will obtain a Farm Endorsement from the DMV.

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and push, pull, and lift items weighting 50 lbs.
  • Ability to wear a backpack-mounted propane tank weighing up to 45 lbs.
  • The position requires manual dexterity, auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.

About You

We are looking for folks to help staff our stand at the Roslindale Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. We are looking for responsible individuals with great customer service skills to help with all aspects of set up, sales, and takedown at market. Retail experience and an interest in cooking/gardening are preferred, though not required. You must be able to follow and directions, work quickly and efficiently, and keep a smile on your face throughout a long and hectic day. You must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, stand up for 7 hours with only one break, and be able to safely lift 40 lbs in any kind of weather. You must be reliable and punctual and have a fantastic attitude. You also must be committed to great customer service and friendly with market customers. We see our market customers as members of the Brookwood community, and want to make sure they have a good experience shopping with us.

About the Position

You will work Saturdays June 4th- Nov 19th 7:00 am-2:30 pm. You will need to work a minimum of two Saturdays per month. You will meet at and leave from Adams Park in Roslindale; you do not need to come to the farm. You will assist with all aspects of unloading the truck, setting up the stand, creating displays, restocking products, selling to the public, breaking down the stand, and packing the truck at the end of the day. You may also need to attend a three hour training and orientation session on Saturday May 28th.

You will work under the direction of Brookwood staff including Managers and Farm Apprentices. You may assist with any other tasks that may come up at market such as making signs and record keeping.

Compensation

You will be paid $10/hour, produce from the stand, and discounts on produce we resell from other farms such as fruit and corn. You will also earn paid sick time in accordance with Massachusetts law.

Brookwood Community Farm grows diversified vegetables and flowers on 8 acres of land on 3 different sites in Milton and Canton, MA. Using organic methods (not certified) we provide produce for a 230- member CSA, a weekly farmer’s market, a food access market, and donations to local food pantries. As a non-profit community farm we are open to the public and offer educational and volunteer opportunities for our CSA members, youth and corporate groups. Heron Pond Farm, in South Hampton, NH, currently has openings for CSA delivery and farmers market sales. We’re looking for folks with good people skills who love local food and can do the veggie lifting that comes with the jobs. We love what we do here at the farm and our staff is passionate and energetic.
