Requirement: B.S. in Horticulture or equivalent.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitors annual and perennial crops for proper watering, fertilizer, and pests.
  • Nutrition management working in collaboration with the Head Grower.
  • Applies chemicals, fertilizers, and biologicals
  • Evaluates data to identify crop challenges.
  • Manipulates greenhouse temperature, humidity to control crop growth.

Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills a plus

GREENHOUSE MANAGER- NEXT BARN OVER FARM

Responsibilities

The NBO Greenhouse Manager runs greenhouse-based transplant production for 30 acres of crop production. This includes but is not limited to: inventorying and sourcing all greenhouse supplies, implementing propagation schedules, greenhouse record keeping, monitoring greenhouse equipment, pest and disease scouting, and watering. The Greenhouse Manager trains and supervises seasonal staff in greenhouse protocols, propagation techniques, watering and venting. The Greenhouse Manager also maintains communication with the farm manager to ensure timely coordination of transplant production and field preparation.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in organic agriculture preferred
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, ability to clearly train others in greenhouse protocols, and communicate regularly with farm manager
  • Highly organized with a keen attention to detail
  • Demonstrated competence working in greenhouse transplant production
  • Positive and outgoing attitude
  • Some Spanish preferred

Schedule

This is a part-time, part-season position. The Greenhouse Manager joins us in late February and works part-time (~20 hours/week) through October. The Greenhouse Manager works 2 days per week seeding, transplanting, and maintaining the greenhouse, and also performs regular watering/monitoring on other days, including weekends. This position may be combined with another role at the farm for the right candidate.

Compensation

We offer a competitive hourly wage, beginning at $13/hour with higher wages offered to candidates with considerable experience. Left Field Farm is an eight acre organic veggie farm on the edge of Merrymeeting Bay in Bowdoinham, Maine. This is the farm’s 6th season of production growing a diverse mix of crops. We market our produce through a 150 member CSA program serving Bowdoinham and the Portland area and wholesale distribution to local restaurants and stores. Left Field Farm is seeking full-time farm hands for the 2018 season. We are looking to fill multiple positions:

Greenhouse Manager

A full-time position overseeing greenhouse and seedling production for the season. Employment begins in April (part-time in March available) and continues through October. This is a full-time position (approx. 40 hrs/wk). In spring the majority of time is spent seeding, potting up, watering, record keeping, and overseeing seedling production. In summer the majority of time is spent as part of the field crew with approximately 1/4 of your time managing the greenhouse production. This is a good opportunity for someone to take on significant responsibility, gain management experience, and continue to learn small scale farming of a diversity of crops. Must be well-organized and detail oriented. Previous farm experience required. 

Field Crew

Employment begins in May and continues through October (approx. 40 hrs/wk). There is some potential for schedule flexibility, as well as continued part-time work beyond October if desired. This is a good opportunity for someone looking to continue to learn small scale farming of a diversity of crops and growing using high-tunnels for season extension. Previous farm experience preferred but not required.

Additionally there is the opportunity for someone in either position looking for year-round work to take on expansion of the farm’s shoulder season production.

The preferred applicants will have a strong work ethic, pay attention to details, be able to work quickly and well with a team, be willing to work alone at times, and be able to work under all kinds of weather conditions including rain, cold, sun, and breezy with partial clouds. A good sense of humor is always appreciated. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs (about 1 basset hound). The job includes a range of field work including transplanting, field maintenance, harvesting, washing, packing, greenhouse work, and delivery. Pay is hourly (starting pay is $11/hr), plus all of the organic produce you can eat.

Position Summary
Creative Living Community of Connecticut’s (CLCC) Greenhouse Coordinator works with Program and Marketing Coordinator.  The Greenhouse Coordinator will report to the Safety Committee who is responsible to the Board of Directors Governance Committee.

Essential Functions

  • Provides daily supervision of Greenhouse volunteers (both typical and those with developmental disabilities) from Monday through Friday.
  • Track propagation, labeling for start date, name of product, harvest date, initials of seeder, etc.
  • Develop the overall growing plan for CLCC customers.
  • Ensure all tools are safely stored. Used soil is disposed of properly.
  • Responsible for purchasing necessary supplies including soil, seeds, etc.
  • Provide daily quality control for product excellence.
  • Gather information and submit weekly and first of month inventory and sales totals for database input for Safety Committee review.
  • Respond to monthly greens report explaining any inconsistencies.
  • Track daily activities in Greenhouse binder.
  • Ensure Greenhouse volunteers (both typical and those with developmental disabilities) are scheduled.
  • Track volunteer hours.
  • Provide input into the CLCC greenhouse and program budgets.
  • Serve on the Greenhouse Safety Committee and attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Promote the CLCC vision whenever and wherever appropriate.

Frog Bench Farms (FBF) is an organic Urban Farm located at the bottom of the Wasatch foothills in Salt Lake City growing 1.5 acres of high quality organic veggies, herbs, fruits, nuts and edible flowers since 2012.  The greenhouse is 2875 square feet of raised planters and racks.  If possible all plants are started from seed.  The greenhouse and farm are on automated irrigation systems.  Cold frames, low/high hoop houses are used to extend seasons.  Sales are primarily to local restaurants, caterers and food trucks.  There are chickens in need of egg collection, petting, coop clean out, food and water.  We do most work by hand but do have an electric tractor and motorized ATV we use when needed.

Typical week would be:

Monday through Friday with a minimum of 3 hours per day in the morning.

Monday:                                  discussing greenhouse/farm projects for the week, starting harvest for Tuesday delivery

Tuesday:                                 harvesting, washing, packaging, clean-up done in the morning

Wednesday – Friday:              weeding, pruning, projects, plant, soil maintenance, seeding and cleaning.
