In the fall of 2011, the Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) was formed on the premise that family farming could be a way of the future for Hmong immigrant farmers, as well as a way of the past. Conceived of and governed by Hmong farmers themselves, HAFA is dedicated to advancing the prosperity of Hmong farmers through cooperative endeavors, capacity building and advocacy.

 

Hmong farmers occupy a unique place in the history of Minnesota’s local foods movement. The Hmong are political refugees who immigrated to the United States after the Vietnam War. Upon their arrival, and with limited resources, many used their agricultural skills to raise their families. By the late 1980s, Hmong farmers had revitalized the Saint Paul and Minneapolis Farmers Markets, transforming them into some of the most vibrant markets in the country, while also changing Minnesota’s taste buds for Thai chili peppers and Chinese Bok Choy. As hard working farmers, they provided the fresh produce that fueled the exponential growth of farmers markets into suburban communities and urban corridors, and greatly increased the supply of nutritious, affordable food.

Today, Hmong American farmers account for more than 50% of all the farmers in metropolitan farmers markets. Hmong farmers are at the center of a Minnesota-based local foods economy that according to AgStar Financial Services generates over $250 million in annual sales. This explosion, awareness and interest in local foods and small-scale farming in Minnesota would not be possible without Hmong farmers.

GREENHOUSE LABORER/FARM MANAGER

We are an earth friendly greenhouse and produce farm operation located about half an hour south of the Cities in search of a full time, year round employee. This position rotates between greenhouse work November-May, and farm work May-October. Only serious candidates with prior greenhouse and or organic farm experience should apply thank you!

Greenhouse Duties Include:

  • Moving plant trays throughout the greenhouse
  • Preparing greenhouse bays for growing

Farm Manager Duties Include:

  • Work in a face paced environment with possibility to work over 40 hours a week (seasonally – In May we work up to 12 hours a day 6-7 days a week)
  • Bend, lift and carry up to 50lbs and be on your feet for 8+ hours
  • Identify different varieties of flower and veggie plants

SUPERVISOR:                    Farm Manager

The Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) is a membership based, social justice minded nonprofit organization that works with Hmong American farmers in the Twin Cities and the surrounding metropolitan area. The mission of the organization is to advance the economic, social and cultural prosperity of these farmers and their families. Many Hmong farmers face numerous obstacles to farming, including lack of access to land, capital, training and alternative markets besides the farmers’ markets. Through cooperative farming, education and advocacy, HAFA works with Hmong farmers to create a path to wealth creation, not just income generation. HAFA was started by and is led by Hmong American farmers and uses an organizing approach to do its work.

HAFA is hiring an entry level Farm Hand to start immediately. The Farm Hand will report to the HAFA Farm Manager and work on the HAFA Farm, a 155-acre incubator and research produce farm located in Vermillion Township, Minnesota. A good candidate must be self-motivated, responsible, and hardworking. The candidate must also be willing to perform physical labor and work outside or in the fields. The position requires a minimum of 40 hours per week, but may require longer hours and work on the weekend.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Cultivating soil, sowing crops, controlling weeds and harvesting crops;
  • Inspecting, maintaining or fixing equipment, structures, or projects on the farm;
  • Conducting ground and building maintenance on the farm;
  • Interacting with farmers to ensure compliance with HAFA Farm protocols and to ascertain farmers’ thoughts about the farm;
  • Preparing the farm for the September Open House.
  • Maintaining HAFA demonstration projects on bee hives, cover crops, pollinators, and pea trellises
  • Maintaining HAFA crops on such as watermelons, cucumbers and corn
  • Communicating with farmers, staff, and technical experts about HAFA research projects
  • Collecting soil and water samples and tests
  • Interacting with farmers to ensure compliance with HAFA Farm protocols and collect farmers’ ideas about the farm
  • Preparing the farm for annual events

Dodge Nature Center, a non-profit dedicated to providing quality environmental education programs on its 462-acre nature preserve in West St. Paul, MN and Cottage Grove, seeks a motivated Farm Assistant to assist in the daily operations of its farm.

Compensation

This is a fulltime, non-exempt position. Hourly rate is determined based on qualifications. Benefit package includes vacation, sick time, holidays, health, dental, and life insurance, and 403(b) plan.

  • One year of agricultural related experience preferred

Who we are:  Harvest Moon is an independent, member-owned natural foods cooperative located just 15 miles west of downtown Minneapolis.  We are a full-service grocery store with a big heart and a small town atmosphere.  Our commitment is to provide products that are ethically traded and sustainably produced while supporting growers and producers within our local economy.

Background:   We opened our doors in June of 2010 and currently have approximately 1500 member-owners.  We are looking for a General Manager to report to the Board of Directors, with responsibility for overseeing all aspects of Co-op operations.  The Board of Directors has adopted Policy Governance and manages the GM through our Ends and Executive Limitation policies.

General Manager Role: Manage all aspects of co-op operations to meet the goals and objectives established by the Board of Directors.  The General Manager is the “face” of Harvest Moon – a charismatic and knowledgeable presence engaging with our member-owners, shoppers, Board and community.  We are looking for someone committed to making Harvest Moon a thriving retail business by participating in and contributing to the local economy and building community by creating an inviting and unique environment in which to shop, learn, gather and interact.

Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Financial Accountability:
    • Prepares and executes against annual plan including operating, cash and capital budgets
    • Achieves bottom line profitability and growth
    • Monitors and manages all labor and other controllable expenditures

Required Qualifications:

  • General Management experience and bottom-line accountability in a retail food business, preferably retail grocery and/or natural foods cooperative operation.
  • Experience with operating, capital and cash budgeting and management.
  • Management experience, including staffing, training, directing, evaluating, compensating and releasing employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate a vision and positively motivate, lead and collaborate to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and make effective decisions, appropriately balancing risks and benefits to achieving complex, time-bound objectives in a multi-priority environment.
  • Highly effective written, oral and electronic communications; comfort with and effective use of contemporary communications and other technologies.

Vibrant Life Sharing Community Seeks Gardener

Camphill Village Minnesota is an intentional community of approximately 60 people, including adults with developmental disabilities, located on a 500-acre biodynamic farm ten miles north of Sauk Centre in Central Minnesota. People live together family-style in seven different homes. Everyone shares in the responsibilities of life in the community. The community is based on the belief that every individual, regardless of ability, is an independent spiritual being.

The Village has a strong agricultural component made up of farming and gardening. Craft work includes weaving and card-making, as well as a bakery that provides for the needs of the Village and sells in the surrounding area.

Description of Length of Service:
Minimum of one year for assistants, although we are actively seeking seasoned gardeners who are interested in making a longer-term commitment, to carry the garden for a number of years.

Main Responsibilities:
To help manage and tend our 3-acre biodynamic vegetable garden and also our food processing kitchen during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Live and assist in one of our houses, lifesharing with other coworkers as well as adults with developmental disabilities.

Main Duties:
Planning, planting, tending, harvesting and processing vegetables. Coworkers are expected to also integrate people with developmental disabilities into their work.

Required Skills And Knowledge:
Knowledge of and experience with organic and biodynamic gardening methods is essential for a person applying for a leadership position in the garden. Otherwise, this is not required, just helpful.

Onsite training provided for short term helpers. For applicants interested in a leadership position, prior training is needed. Living expenses provided, along with medical insurance, use of machinery and vehicles. 3-week paid vacation per year.
