About Crane Bay Farms

Crane Bay Farms is being established in co-ordination with a new active senior living community in Oak Island, NC. The farming operation will A) provide fresh vegetables sold on a CSA model to residents of the community and the general public, and B) establish a perennial nursery for fruit and landscaping trees. All farming operations will use organic methods. The initial farm site will cover an approximately 25 acre area, with plans to expand and include additional agricultural enterprises over time.

Position Overview

The Farm Manager will oversee the development of the first two agricultural enterprises at Crane Bay Farms, an organic mixed vegetable CSA and a perennial nursery,

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Establish crop production for the community CSA and perennial nursery, including land preparation, crop design, ordering, planting, pest management, propagation, transplanting, weeding, watering, and harvesting

· Coordinate distribution of CSA shares to members and sales of surplus produce not sold through CSA

· Supervise and coordinate with other farmers renting land for operations

· Support farm infrastructure development, including irrigation systems, greenhouses, outbuildings, and equipment

· Greet and answer guest questions about the farm

· Lead volunteers and community members as required

· Manage a team of farm workers in day-to-day farm tasks

· Collect data and support organized record-keeping

· Assist in implementation of farm education and events

· Host guests and lead occasional tours

· Participate in regular staff meetings

Required Qualifications and Experiences

High Country CSA Coordinator Position

The High Country CSA is a multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture Business. The mission of High Country CSA is to produce socially and ecologically responsible food through collaboration between small farms in the High Country. HC-CSA envisions a local food system which mutually benefits the farmers, the ecosystem, and the community.

The HC-CSA is currently housed under Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, and is working towards incorporating as an independent LLC. There are four farms who supply produce to the HC-CSA and they also play a key role in decision making and set policy. The HC-CSA Coordinator reports to the Executive Director of BRWIA in financial matters and to Farmer Representatives for day-to-day operations. The HC-CSA position is part-time, generally 10-15 hours per week in the off season (November through April), and 25-30 per week during the season (May through October). We are offering $12 to $15 per hour depending on experience and skill set.

About Funny Girl Farm

Funny Girl Farm is a four-year-old family-owned farm, producing vegetables, fruits, eggs and mushrooms in Durham, NC.  Our goal is to provide fresh, delicious and sustainably-grown produce and excellent customer service, while maintaining a positive, productive, and educational workplace. In the coming years, the farm seeks to increase revenue through efficiency of production and growth in wholesale and retail sales.

We grow year-round and use sustainable farming practices including crop rotation, cover cropping, and IPM.  Our vegetable operation is on 2.5 acres and includes one greenhouse and four high tunnels.  We produce free-range eggs from 650 hens and shiitake mushrooms from 1,400+ logs.

The farm is in a prime location on a busy back-route between Durham and Chapel Hill, just 10-15 minutes from both downtowns.  We have a successful retail farmstand, which offers a curated selection of local products, a growing customer base, and a farmstand CSA program.  We also have established wholesale relationships with many restaurants and small grocers in the area.

The farm offers many amenities to assist production including: newly completed barn with state-of-the-art wash and packing station, three walk-in coolers, kitchen, and office, as well as delivery vehicle, Gator, and tractor.

Production Manager

We are seeking an experienced manager for a salaried position leading production at our farm.  The manager will benefit from a knowledgeable, hardworking farm crew of one part-time and two full-time farmers who are currently running the farm operation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hire, train, schedule, and manage farm crew.  Supervise farm crew on a daily basis and delegate responsibilities for maximum efficiency in all production tasks.  Communicate with and manage farm volunteers.
  • Oversee all elements of on-farm production for garden and mushrooms. This includes crop planning, propagation, soil management, cultivation, integrative pest management, harvest, post-harvest handling and quality control.
  • Oversee all elements of caring for chickens, maintaining flock, and caring for two Great Pyrenees guard dogs.
