Job description:

Caney Fork Farms is seeking full-time farm hands to help raise a diverse mix of vegetables, both annual and perennial. Farms hands will report to the Vegetable Manager and assist in all aspects of production: seeding, transplanting, weeding, pest management, harvest and post-harvest, equipment use and maintenance, etc.

Skills and responsibilities include:

  • Keen observation, care, and concern for plants and animals
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Tractor and other mechanical skills a plus
  • Ability to work full days in all weather conditions and lift 50lbs
  • Periodic assistance with other aspects of the farm (livestock, compost, fruit and nut trees, farm maintenance, etc.)
  • Minimum one year of previous experience in farming required

Housing:

Employee housing is offered within a 10-minute drive of the farm. This property will house the majority of the farm crew so candidate must be amenable to bonfires and pot-luck dinners.

Compensation:

Hourly wage, based on experience.

Job Description: The mission of the agricultural operations supervisor is to ensure reliable availability and delivery of high-quality biomass from our partner contract farmers. The company has a successful history producing natural indigo across Tennessee and is now seeking an experienced agricultural operations supervisor to expand crop production in and around Robertson County, TN.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily operations to achieve annual production plan
  • Establish and supervise comprehensive crop scouting program
  • Schedule and coordinate production and harvesting with processing plant manager and contract farmers
  • Oversee maintenance of agricultural equipment
  • Ensure accurate and timely data collection and reporting
  • Coordinate on-farm research activities
  • Supervise a small team of agricultural operations associates
  • Interface with contract farmers and greenhouse growers to provide feedback and guidance on conditions and practices
  • Assist with off-season research planning and execution
  • Recruit farmers and greenhouse growers for future acreage expansion

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Post-secondary (associates or bachelors) degree in agriculture-related field preferred.
  • 3+ years operating and maintaining heavy machinery (experience with agricultural equipment preferred)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize competing tasks logically
  • Follows tasks through to completion
  • High standards of excellence with ability to initiate difficult conversations and require accountability when needed
  • Comfortable in changing environment
  • Good driving record
  • Basic computer and mathematics skills

Preferred:

  • 3+ years farm supervisory experience in mid-scale farm production or agricultural R&D environment using progressive row crop farming techniques
  • Knowledge of tobacco farming techniques and equipment
  • Successful record of executing farm research projects and incorporating results into future commercial farming practices
  • 3+ years managing network of contract farmers
  • 3+ years supervising farm workers
  • Knowledge of tools and software to facilitate managing geographically-dispersed farmland
  • Working knowledge of Spanish

POSITION DESCRIPTION: We seek a high­ energy farm worker to assist the farm manager in all aspects of produce and flower production on our five­acre Certified Naturally Grown CSA farm. Nature of the work is intense and fast­paced. Farmers are expected to work quickly and efficiently in all weather conditions. Farm worker will assist the farm manager in the following responsibilities:

  • Farming and harvesting for a 150 member CSA farm and student farm;
  • Execution of all farm tasks on a sustainable vegetable farm, including: irrigation, soil fertility, pest and weed pressure, soil and bed preparation, planting, cultivation, harvest, and proper post­harvest handling for a variety of vegetables;
  • Properly maintaining farm infrastructure, tools, and equipment.

About the Urban Farm
