Farm Description:
Cooper Farms is a 300 acre peach farm that is located in Fairfield Texas. Cooper Farms Supplies HEB and other grocery store with fresh produce. We grow plums, figs, nectarines, donut peaches and white peaches as well. Cooper Farms also grows some vegetables to supply its retail store. Cooper Farms sells roughly half of its crop wholesale and the other half retail through its country store and roadside trucks. Cooper Farms is family owned and operated.

Position Duration:
Full Time- Year around-Permeant position

Responsibilities:
The Farm Manger will work closely with the crew to plant, thin, harvest, and prune throughout the year. Cooper Farms is looking for a fast paced highly motivated individual who can keep productivity high. The right candidate should be easy going, passionate, work well alone and with a group. Candidates must be able to safely lift and carry 50 lbs., have a valid driver’s license, and the ability and interest to work long hours outside in any type of weather. Candidates should be able to drive and operate a tractor and will need to have an agricultural background. The candidate will need to be able to problem solve and look for ways to be more efficient.

Compensation:

Salary will start out at $50,000 per year and after a 3 month probationary period to determine if the candidate is the right fit for Cooper Farms then the Farm Manager salary will be increased to $60,000 per year.  Continued increase over time is possible. Possible living quarters may be available.

Texas A&M University hiring Blueberry Farm Manager

Job Summary: The Blueberry Farm Manager is responsible for managing the operating budget, farm inventory, planting, facilities, equipment and personnel of the university’s Twin Oaks Blueberry Farm. As the purpose of the Blueberry Farm is to support the academic programs of the department, the Blueberry Farm Manager will coordinate farm operations with class activities, research programs, and service events as dictated by departmental faculty.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science in an agricultural discipline. Experience in agriculture and specifically with small fruit production, landscape management and retail sales. Experience operating, maintaining and repairing equipment, especially irrigation and lawn maintenance equipment. A strong understanding of plant nutrition, disease, and pests, including their control. Experience in preparing post-harvest good, i.e. jams, jellies, etc…for resale. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English and working with a computer. Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Pesticide Applicator’s License or ability to attain such within 6 months of hire. Proper food safety training and/or certificates or ability to complete such within 6 month of hire date.

Preferred Education and Experience: Masters of Science in an agricultural discipline. Experience with plant breeding and/or selection. Knowledge of plant science research methods and experience designs. Evidence of supervisory experience, business management and a basic understanding of inventory control.

Duties Performed:

  • Maintains inventory and financial records for Blueberry Farm activities. Prepare all sales reports.
  • Maintains production records for all cultivars of all production species grown.
  • Directs the “You Pick” operation for Blueberries, Pecans and other crops, as available, during harvest time. This operation is contingent upon sufficient production during that growing season.
  • When available, produce after-market food goods, i.e. – jams, jellies, etc…, with university grown products.
  • Directs and/or performs examinations of all production plants to ensure maintenance of plant health and vigor. When necessary, the farm manager will direct and/or perform administration of fungicides, bactericides, and/or insecticides. All records concerning application of pesticides will be maintained.
  • Directs maintenance of Blueberry Farm facilities. When new construction occurs or major repairs are needed, the farm manager is responsible for coordinating with facilities to ensures timely completion of all projects.
  • Directs and performs the operation, maintenance, and repair of farm mechanical equipment, such as mowers, line trimmers, etc.
  • Directs the management of Blueberry Farm grounds. All grounds must be maintained in a well-kept condition.
  • Directs planting of replacement bushes and/or trees, as necessary . Directs planting of new species and cultivars, including selection and preparation of newly planted areas.
  • Directs the irrigation of all farm crops. Ensure that all irrigation systems are maintained in good working order and capable of delivering sufficient water flow to prevent damage during extreme drought.
  • Works with departmental faculty and outside organizations to arrange special events on the university farm, such as 4-H, FFA, departmental student organizations, public school tours, etc.
  • Recommends purchases of new equipment such as mowers, line trimmers, etc.
  • Approves the purchase of all supplies needed in the management of the farm.
  • Supervises all Blueberry Farm employees to ensure efficient completion of necessary tasks.
  • Interacts with departmental faculty, assisting them with instructional and research needs. Assists with set up of Plant and Food Science labs when necessary. Manage farm resources in conjunction with department head and faculty

The production farmer is responsible for planting, tending to, harvesting, washing, weighing, and packaging the produce for the cafeteria.
