The gleaning program coordinator will streamline systems to share excess food with hunger relief network partners, and support volunteer programs that divert food from the waste-stream by processing blemished or excess produce into value-added food products that can feed hungry families all year long.

The Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) is a nonprofit 501(3)(c) organization, created in 1990, whose mission is the perpetual stewardship of natural and created conservation lands, sensitive species, and their resident ecosystems. Stewardship activities are currently divided between California and Washington. In the State of Washington, CNLM’s South Puget Sound Program focuses on conservation of one of the rarest ecosystems in the United States, the prairie and oak woodlands of Cascadia, especially those lands and habitats within the South Sound Region. In that Region, the Program aims to protect, restore habitats, and support recovery of rare species that are candidates for federal listing.

CNLM’s Seed Production/Nursery team produces native seed with the goal of filling the seed needs of our restoration partners throughout Washington and Oregon.  We produce seed of over 100 native plant species (including rare and endangered species) on 4 production sites, totaling 20 acres.


The Field Crew Member (Seed Production Technician) will have the opportunity to step into an exciting and unique agricultural system that has grown significantly over the past few years.   We are looking for candidates with a positive attitude who are motivated, communicative, and hardworking and ready to jump in.  Ideal candidates have experience in an agriculture, nursery, or conservation capacity.  This person will join a diverse crew in performing tasks which include, but are not limited to weeding, harvesting seed, transplanting.  Must be comfortable doing repetitive tasks over prolonged periods of time, adhering to proper tool use and body mechanics.

Washington – Willowood Farm hiring Multiple Positions

Willowood Farm is a 20-acre historic family farm with expected 10 acres in vegetable production in 2018.  We grow following organic standards but are not certified.  We are located centrally on Whidbey Island north of Seattle.  Our farm is often considered the “heart” of the Ebey Landing National Historic Reserve, an unique unit of the National Park Service that was established in 1978 with the purposes of maintaining our beautiful historic farming small town community.  Within just hours of our farm you can easily access both the Olympic Peninsula and the Cascade Mountain Range, as well as surrounded by the amazing waters of the Pacific Ocean.


Willowood Farm is run and managed by Farmer Georgie who grew up on the property.  Her father Bill is an essential employee, working on tractor and equipment maintenance and additional special projects. Our farm crew consists of  Farmer Georgie who handles sales, marketing, networking and overall business management.  Melony Edwards who has been on the farm for three years taking over this year as Farm Manager in Training overseeing employee relations, employee training, farm organization and systems and is assisting Georgie with sales, ordering, marketing and community outreach.  We also have hired a new pack shed manager to oversee organization and pack shed and walk-in management of our crops and we are looking to hire a field production and equipment manager who will oversee and implement our production needs and schedules, and operate and manager our machinery (with mechanical help from Farmer Bill).  And we are also looking to hire a harvest manager that runs the crew in the fields on harvest days as well as one two possibly two field crew hands for general work.  All employees in the crew work together closely and are cross trained on each others jobs.

In addition, in March of 2017 Willowood Farm suffered a devastating barn fire and lost our main storage and indoor production area along with about 80 percent of our equipment.  We began immediately rebuilding our systems (new pack shed, new tractors, etc) but still have a long ways to go.  2018 will see a focus on building of a new barn plus implementing new equipment, systems and ideas.  The barn fire was devastating, but also gave opportunity to create new and better systems going forward.  All employees in the 2018 crew will be challenged with looking at the farm with new eyes as far as how do we recreate ourselves better, more efficiently. 


Willowood Farm is a production farm with a strong focus on efficiency, crop diversity, and a superb quality product.  We pride ourselves on being one of the leading suppliers of vegetables to the best restaurants in the Pacific Northwest and we do so with consistency and quality.  We produce crops year-round and sell primarily to the growing farm to table restaurant scene in Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest.  We produce crops following organic standards but are not certified.  We use a mix of more modern and “new” small farm techniques and practices with time-honored practices of old.  We have both tractors, and hoes! Our time is devoted to tasks as driven by the ebb and flow of a vegetable farm, following the demands of the season.  Our time is mostly divided between production, seeding, transplanting and weeding what our tractors cannot get to.  And lots and lots of time spent in harvest and packing as our season progresses and the bounty comes in, with abundance!


We seek energetic and motivated individuals who are not only a smart, tough, resourceful, detail-oriented team player to fill the following positions.  All positions including housing on farm as part of compensation package.  We can accept couples as long as both are filling one of the duties on the farm. 


This is our “Chief Grower” responsible for all duties related to the efficient growing of our beautiful, tasty and sellable vegetables!  The ideal applicant will have excellent communication skills, enjoy being in a leadership role, and have strong skills in vegetable production and experience, or at least strong interest in, small farm equipment and techniques, like growing on plastic mulch, using Planet Junior walk behind tractors, flame weeding, irrigation systems and etc.  The ideal person will be able to self-manage weekly tasks according to our planting calendars and be able to identify and work with other management persons to make sure fields are ready, needed supplies are available, and delegate, assign and overseas all production related tasks to our field crew.  The Field Production Manager will work closely and collaboratively with the Harvest Manager, Packing Shed Manager, Farm Manager and of course, Farmer Georgie.  The Field Production Manager also will work closely with Bill on tractor and equipment related issues.


This person is charge of all field aspects of our very busy and intense harvest days. The ideal candidate has the interest and skills to lead a crew of similar folks in harvest related tasks, and the maturity and  ability to work with our Production Manager as assistant field task manager and have experience harvesting vegetables on a production scale vegetable farm. The ideal applicant will have excellent communication skills, enjoy being in a leadership role, and have strong skills in harvest to set a timely pace for crew and oversee quality control.  The ideal person must be highly flexible and adaptive to continually changing harvest needs and demands and be able to quickly make decisions and instruct crew.  The Harvest Manager will work closely with the Farm Manager, Production Manager, Pack Shed Manager and Farmer Georgie


We currently have openings for up to three, full time seasonal field crew positions for the 2018 season. Plans for 2018: The apprentice will work and study under the guidance of Heartsong’s caretaker who is a certified permaculture designer. The caretaker and apprentice will be tasked with implementing an ever-evolving work plan, including enhancing and maintaining the 8000 sq. ft. polyculture garden (including weekly harvests and distributions), maintaining a flock of laying hens, tending the goat herd, re-establishing a honeybee colony, seed saving, woody plant propagation, food preserving, developing a pasture management plan and continuing with planting the food forest. In addition, other general site maintenance, upkeep and improvements will also be included in the work plan as determined from time to time.

On our certified organic farm, students grow vegetables, seed crops and cover-crops as well as pastured poultry, sheep and pigs. Students then sell farm products to the community through a CSA program, a farmer’s market, local grocers and a weekly farm stand. Students are involved in all aspects of the farm from prepping the field with tractors to selling produce at farmers market to managing the greenhouse. Students learn a wide range of practical skills including basic mechanics and carpentry, how to use small and large equipment, green­house prop­a­ga­tion, and of course planting, weed­ing, har­vest­ing, mar­ket­ing, record keep­ing and much more.

Students are also coached on how to manage the farm as a small business and create a per­sonal farm busi­ness plan where their farm dreams are explored and evaluated and a plan is created. Lovely small town atmosphere in cool, lush Western WA. Agricultural experience is not required. More important are: a positive attitude, willingness to work and try hard, good verbal communication skills, physical health, strong work ethic, flexibility, and a love of healthy cooking and eating. Lots of hands on instruction and responsibility in all aspects of the farm’s operation, both in the field and behind the scenes. In addition to our on-farm learning, interns participate in a WSU sponsored curriculum in which classes are offered throughout a three county region to enrich the educational experience. Continuing education credits are offered for successful completion of this program. Apprentices also have the opportunity to tend their own small garden plot during their stay here. Live in a cozy, wood-heated yurt on our beautiful, quiet 13 acre farm an hour, including ferry ride, from Seattle. Dwellings are electrified, furnished, and have (somewhat sketchy, but serviceable) wireless Internet access. There is a communal kitchen, shared bathroom and laundry. We’ve offered our apprenticeship for well over a decade and have developed a well-rounded, respected, and, in many cases life-changing opportunity for those who come to work alongside us. The Organic Farm School (OFS) is seeking candidates for a full-time Assistant Farm Manager position. Successful candidates will assist and report to the OFS Farm Manager in accomplishing the crop production and land stewardship goals of the OFS farm while simultaneously leading and training OFS students in these farm activities.

The Organic Farm School provides experiential education to aspiring farmers on how to start and manage their own small farm through classes, group discussions, self-reflection and co-management of the OFS Student Farm. The 10-acre OFS Student Farm grows organic produce for a CSA program, farmers market and local grocers as well as produces and markets organic vegetable seed, poultry, lamb and hay. The ideal Assistant Farm Manager will be skilled in organic vegetable and seed crop production, will be a positive and effective crew leader and mentor, and have some mixed livestock and forage production experience.

The primary responsibilities of this position includes:

  • Assist the Farm Manager in all aspects of the operation and management of the OFS Farm. The farm operation includes organic vegetable and seed crop production, poultry and livestock production, hay production, cover cropping, direct marketing and site and infrastructure maintenance (45%)
  • Lead and train student farmers in all farm activities (45%)
  • Assist in the administration of the farm as well as the on-going development, implementation and evaluation of the OFS farmer training program and training farm (10%)

Qualifications and experience

The Assistant Farm Manager position requires strong farming, leadership and communication skills. The ideal candidate will have experience with team leadership and instruction, will have worked on and helped manage a successful diversified farm operation and will be a highly organized team player. Qualified candidates will be comfortable with tractors and farm equipment, proficient in most crop production activities, have a positive attitude and communicates well with staff and students. Ideal candidates also bring other skills such as mechanics, construction, research management, etc.

The following are required:

  • Minimum 3 years experience working on a commercial organic farm.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in leadership or teaching positions.

Responsibilities of the positions

Assist in the management and operation of the OFS student farm’s infrastructure, production and marketing

  • Assist in efficiently implementing production plans for crops, livestock and forage with farmer-trainees
  • Assist in implementing a farm marketing plan that includes CSA, farmers market and wholesale outlets
  • Assist in implementing soil improvement and climate-friendly farming practices
  • Assist in maintaining the farm’s equipment and infrastructure to effectively support the production goals of the program
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records as needed and help manage organic certification
  • Assist in managing farm research projects


Educational training of student farmers in the field

  • Train and guide farmer-trainees in farm tasks on the student farm
  • Evaluate farmer-trainee progress and offer constructive guidance
  • Provide leadership in creating a positive social environment for farmer-trainees


Administration of the OFS farm and education program

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with other staff, program partners and the public
  • Assist in creating annual and long-term work plans and budgets for the farming and educational aspects of the OFS
  • Assist in managing farm and education budgets including tracking expenses and income

Compensation and schedule


  • This is a salaried position (not hourly). Salary commensurate with experience (starts at $30K/yr)


  • Full-time. Generally M-F but flexibility is required to cover occasional evening/weekend responsibilities.
